I've seen this schem before, but never noticed the 2n2 caps to ground after the PI coupling caps! You don't see anyone ripping these out of their $2k+ Divided By 13's to 'open up the tone'. I'm surprised there is no Vox style Cut control, which would be a little less heavy-handed than the hardwired 2n2's.
You can clearly see the ceramic caps going to ground in the photo as well.

Most likely "openning up" this amp.. running EL84's would not lead to a positive tonal bliss.
EL84's are bright by design. Fenders based most designs around USA market tubes, 6V6, 6L6. which are a darker tube tonally.
Just because an amp uses EL84's don't assume it's a VOX circuit.
IHMO Divied by 13 are nice amps but not in my top 10 at the price point they target. Lots of friends and artist I know use them. However they are all endorsements.

Sorry for the confusion, but I was being sarcastic, and just saying that the 2n2 caps that people yank out in their Fenders seem to cause no trouble in their expensive boutique amps.
Secondly, I don't know what you're smoking, but I never said the amp was a Vox (although the PI is identical), and it runs 6V6s anyway.
My feeling is that the 2n2's were used in lieu of NFB to smooth out the output section, and since this amp is not high gain, the effect is diminished (because there's naturally less harmonics).
I just wanted to hear other's thoughts on using such large caps for that purpose, or the similarity with the Fender design many despise.

Wiring looks like a rats nest.
They do sound great, but that sure looks messy inside.

I was thinking the same thing when they reviewed another DB13 in Guitarist Magazine recently. Of course there are many classic, great sounding but messy looking amps.topbrent wrote:Wiring looks like a rats nest.

There seem to be many "boutiqe" builders using Vox-looking PI's. M-less and DrZ come to mind.

wiring looks to be influenced by cbs fender too.
Re: Divided By 13 taking tips from CBS Fender?
All that shielded wire - blah
Re: Divided By 13 taking tips from CBS Fender?
I agree, but that shielded wire ain't sh*t compared to the 2200pf CAPS TO GROUND!
