El Menco Poly Caps (Brown)

Post by Decko »

Hi Tagers,

Found a bunch of El Menco Caps brown in color in the box. Various values.

What do you know about these?

I use the brown turds in my Fender builds when I can find them. IME they sound great in tweed amps. I've never tested one that was bad either. Great caps if you can find them; they seem to come to me as I never actively seek them out..

Those are Arco- ElectroMotive paper/polyester caps. They have the exact same internal construction as the early pre late 70's Sprague 6PS caps. Since the impreganation processes are usally proprietary, there's a good chance that Sprague even made them. Like Cliff said they are great caps if you can find them.

I've used them in my Gibson EH-150, they are good. I get mine from www.33audio.com in Texas. Mark is very good and a fair dealer. He also has a lot of the '70's metal film resistors that are in demand for Dumble type builds.

I didn't know they are good in tweeds, I just finished a 5E8A board using Jupiter "red Astrons" and one Vitamin Q.

The values I am seeing are interesting.

In general are any of these values good for builds?

Considering +/- 10%

would all give you usuable values. I believe these where also used in early Ampeg amps... as well as the first couple Trainwrecks.

My good buddy Mike just listed a ton of these on eBay. I do not stand to gain anything from this auction...just thought you guys might be interested. They were from an organ pull, Mike usually has some cool stuff. If anyone wants his contact info let me know.

Thx,
T
