The lost art of common sense

Post by selloutrr »

I don't mind helping. If I don't know or have first hand experience it's fun to search for the answer. I usually find interesting side notes and things along the way. I've always enjoyed learning new things.

However.. If it's a simple question that pops up an answer in the first page of a Google search. that pisses me off.

Huge difference between not knowning the answer to a question and just being to lazy to try.

Sellout I'm with you, then again maybe we are dinosaurs. Sadly this is become the instant gratification generation; minds are so open that brains are falling out and even the simplest of concepts are dumbed down.

I need to learn how to breathe, is there an app for that? :(

Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

I guess I find comfort in not feeling alone on this.

It's funny that it takes almost as much if not more time to post on here then it does to use a search engine and find an answer. It would be totally different if they then started the post with a directing question from the research they found. but doing all the work... that's the sort of thing I bill for $$$.

You'd be surprised at the questions I don't ask, mostly because research is learning, and asking is umm.. having someone else do the learning.

Some of the forums (fora?) out there appear to be almost entirely populated by people like selloutr descibes, with little or no actual knowledge, who stumble about in the dark bouncing other people's less-than-learned opinions off each other, learning nothing useful because they don't realize the extent of their own ignorance.

So now & then one of these poor souls lands here, finally in search of enlightenment, but still with this web based expectation of instant intellectual gratification that mitigates so successfully against understanding how and why stuff actually works.

I try to help people who are clearly trying to help themselves, but I too draw the line at people who obviously haven't even run a search.

Here endeth the rant.

I feel your pain. When I first started out the internet wasn't that big and I bought books, or actually called long distance to talk to people. My longest call was to Germany. Now, I see some get frustrated if someone doesn't answer their post before the day is out. I'm lucky if, after exploring through all the sidetracking, I actually remember to find what I was looking for in the first place. People don't have the patience for hobbies anymore.

OK this is far left field but I'm throwing it out anyway...

Why the fuck is it so hard for people who chose to use a shopping cart to put it back in the cart collector rack when they are finished? I went to the mall and stayed in the car and took a knap while the wife and kid went shopping. I woke to the sound and jolt of a shopping cart smacking my door.
OK this next part is not going to be the nicest thing to come out of my mouth but it's the most polite way to describe her.

A huge fat bitch!! got in her car and drove off leaving her cart to go where ever the road takes it.

Listen up kids if you need a master thesis.. "Does obesity equal rudeness and self obsorbtion or is it a total lack of awareness in ones suroundings? or are people really just assholes?"

sorry it felt good to vent.

selloutrr: Yes, there are lots of inconsiderate (asshat)people who just let their shopping carts go and allow them to run down the parking lot without a fricking care in the world, then drive off.

And that's why there's a dent in the right front of my wife's Explorer I didn't see till she pointed it out yesterday. I'd been to the grocery store the day before getting some stuff for dinner in her vehicle.

Lefty Strat: As for that gym photo with the escalators...LOL...they have that exact thing in Marina del Rey at their mall...just wondered if this photo below is from there, or something just like it elsewhere in the world.

[img:400:268]https://tubeamparchive.com/files/thumbs ... ca_140.jpg[/img]

And in closing...yes...common sense and decency is becoming rarer and rarer these days.

Someone called me to ask me which of my speakers matched up with Celestion models. I answered his first three questions without a problem. By the 5th one I guess I sounded a little exasperated.

I told him there was a cross-reference page on my site to Celestion models in the horizontal menu bar. I guess he didn't listen to that....because then he told me he was on my site and couldn't figure out why I hadn't provided a speaker cross-reference page, and that I should really get on that with my web guy so people wouldn't have to call and bother me with all these questions.

Then he found the button to the speaker cross-reference page...while we were talking no less. No apology, no "Well, aren't I blind/stupid/dumb..." he just said "I found the page you told me about. I'll check it out."

And then he hung up.

It's the way people have been raised...badly. That's all I can figure out.

I think you're on to something there. My family lives on the west coast now, but I grew up in the south.

I went to a parent/teacher conference where the teacher asked, "You guys aren't originally from the west coast, right?"

She then told us our kids were too polite to have grown up here, that they used 'please' and 'thank you.'

And back to that asking questions when you could easily find the answer on your own. My kids learned that lesson early on. It they ask their dad, they're getting the long answer, complete with background and history. Once they've listened to my fifteen to thirty minute answer, I always say "Or you could search for that on Google."

Youngest one hasn't quite gotten it yet, but the older ones say "Oh crap" and run out of the room when she asks something.

<old man rant>
I didn't have Google when I was growing up. I had to go to the library and use a card catalog that was actually a wall of index cards. I learned how to research things. When I couldn't find things in the library, I subscribed to great publications like ElectroNotes and Polyphony (later to become Electronic Musician), and read every one religiously to expand my knowledge.

And lastly, an old boss was a big inspiration to me. His favorite response to "I wonder what would happen if we..." was "Science, Try It."
