Voicing a line out jack
Hello all, Im making a line out and load box for direct recording and Id like to wire the line out to sound like its hitting a speaker. I know there are a bunch of cab emulators out there and it got me thinking that this may not be that hard to incorporate in my project.
Please keep it simple as Im pretty green compared to most of you. Diagrams would be spectacular.lol

I use the Palmer that selloutrr showed. I mostly use the balanced filter out. To keep it simple, I wonder if you will get away with the top half of the schematic?
The choke / inductor thingy after the load resistors helps to emulate speaker response a little. You may want to pay attention to the quality of the transformers. I think I wasted a day looking into building one, then just ordered it instead. That was very good decision and my girlfriend even bought me a second one.
There is a smaller Palmer, that is just the line out, with speaker "voicing" which you may be able to combine with your own load box.
Which ever way you go, be prepared to spend serious time on radical EQ if you are recording. In the end it is a DI and does not filter the way a speaker does. They are very useful, but don't expect plug and play.

You guys know of a good source for the transformers?

Tony, I've looked into it as I've wanted to build one in the past. Palmer does sell transformers but of course not the ones specifically in the PDI-03. I agree with Overtone in regards to the hassle factor and I'll probably end up just buying one.dorrisant wrote:You guys know of a good source for the transformers?

If you've already got something down to line level, you may want to look at the sims on this page:

You could grab the speak-sim parts of the amp simulators. One is for an open-back Fender, the other a Marshall 4x12.

I don't think you can truly emulate a speaker without a speaker that is moving air. You can get close but it will never be the same as a real speaker. Having said that, I used to have pretty good luck running the amp to a big old 8 ohm resistor and tapping off from that to a DI box. From that DI box I would feed the signal into a board and a graphic EQ and try to recreate a "speaker" curve or whatever sounded good. It mostly worked and allowed me to record late at night in an apartment with the amp cranked. It won't be the same as a speaker moving air but it is a heck of a lot better than plinking away on an un-amplified strat in the middle of the night.

Best thing to do with recording is to run through and Axe-FX or get Redwirez.

Impulse responses are the way to go and you can't get there from filtering.

Randall made cabinets with line outs. Look for one, kicks the ass of anything for what you are trying to do.
