Weber Legacy Series speaker

Post by Randy Magee »

Has anyone tried the Weber Legacy series speakers with an Express? I'd like to have a 1X12 closed back cabinet to tone down the volume of this monster a bit. My band mates have already deemed the 2X12 cabinet that I have way too loud and I tend to agree. There are a lot of options available... magnet size, wattage, etc. Looking for some opinions...

The Legacy appears to be the original scumback speaker line that was mfg by weber. Excellent speaker for express etc. However In my opinion weber made an unethical decision to shortcut scumbacks success and relentless R&D to make a profit. I would spend the money and just buy the scumbacks. A decent attenuater helps tame the express for use with the 212 or 412.

To answer Richie's post: I make Scumbacks here in So Cal now. I hired two guys with almost 30 years speaker building experience to come work with me. All of the assembly is done here, except for the frames which come from a factory in Asia that builds them like they used to in the 60's, using machine screws to hold the magnet plate to the frame (w/epoxy in between), and they punch 8 bolt holes as I had done before. I have sourced all of the cones/spiders from Kurt Mueller in the UK, voice coils here in the US, as well as the other parts needed to build the speakers.

I'm doing the cone treatments myself now as well as some of the assembly of speakers around emails/shipping/etc. I am doing all of the prototype building and testing directly. I have new models on the site, which are the BlackBack era M/H's, and I'll be offering a true low power paper voice coil model like the very early Blues/20w G12M's and 25w G12H30's as soon as I can get back orders caught up and shipped.

For the record, I have three of the Legacy speakers I bought here and tested (they'll be for sale soon, too) against my originals. They aren't Scumbacks in tone, only in (psuedo) looks, and other clients that have bought them have confirmed the same thing to me. In fact, one client sent them back to Weber after they sent him a pair for free to test out, and he told them "They aren't Scumbacks. Try again." in the note he sent back with them.

This client had already sent me one G12H30 frame to recone a few weeks back, got it back and loved it so much he sent me another to do as well. You can read his post here if you like about it: http://www.hugeracksinc.com/forum/viewt ... ck#p772917

I'm pretty busy right now catching up on almost 300 back ordered speakers and 15 cabinets, but we've built/shipped over 200 speakers in two weeks, and should be all caught up on back orders in another 8-9 days.

The new speakers have a black satin finish, 1 year warranty, and come with full waveform testing to make sure they're good before they ship out. Once the back orders are finished, I'm going to build a number of speakers for stock, and ready to ship. And since I have control over production time frames, even if it isn't in stock, I should be able to build and ship it in less than a week.

If there are any questions anyone has, feel free to contact me via email or phone.

And now back to work, I've got five cabs to load and get ready for shipping on Monday! Have a good weekend!

I've been using Weber DT12s with my Exp clone and I really dig em. Smooth and not so loud.
