Re: Almost had a really bad night
I'd probably lose it if I saw my dog having a seizure. Scary stuff. Great how you were still composed enough to do the next thing after seeing the dog like that. My son has seizures when his temp gets too high, and its usually the wife who DOESNT panic. I just stand there and freeze usually.
Re: Almost had a really bad night
Yeah they are scarey business because you have so little control over them. You can try to do things but it's not up to you when they stop. In a way we were lucky I guess, our old cat used to have them when she got stressed out. It was still a shock but at least we knew what was going on so it became more of a damage control then a freak out situation. Though LRB's seizer did feel like it went on forever. I think it was after 6 minutes when he started to foam at the mouth I was bracing for the last breathe. Which would have pretty much been start of the end of my marriage. I'm sure I wouldn't have lived down killing her dog.
Good news LRB is good and snugglier then ever.

Re: Almost had a really bad night
Thought I'd post this since it is an animal thread. We have a pair of one year old border collies that we have been taking to woman's house who is supposedly a dog whisperer. She is a nice lady and her life is devoted to dogs. She works with them, and they get exposure to many other dogs and people for the purpose of socialization. They were there for the afternoon and I went to pick them up after work. This lady tells me that one of our dogs escaped several hours ago and is gone. I grab our other dog, make some phone calls, get a quick story about where the dog was last seen, rally my wife and two sons and we start the search in two different cars. Driving up and down streets, asking random people, putting up signs, handing out cell phone numbers, making a lost dog report at the humane society, etc... Wife crying, kids crying, me trying to hold them all together. Spent the next 9 hours driving around looking for a needle in a haystack. It is amazing how roads full of fast moving traffic seem to appear everywhere when you are looking for your lost dog. Anyway, we got extremely lucky and found her long after we sent the boys to bed It was an emotional night. It is amazing how much they become a part of the family. All's well that ends well.

Glad you found your pup and it's a happy ending. You should ask the lady to give a dog whispering scolding and ask the pup WTF?
it's always more scarey / intense when children are involved. At least for me, I still hear about how one time flying back i wanted to stop at the bass pro shop and our AC had stopped running. When we got home an hour later then we would have it was over 90 degrees in the house and our newly born chinchilla's were all dead. The kid still brings that up. not a great feeling.

Re: Almost had a really bad night
Well.. LRB has been having seizures every 12 hours almost on the dot for the last 36 hours. Took him to the vet this morning, to the tune of $300. (what a racket! they looked at him confirmed he was a dog, asked us his age, and took his temp. Granted it was up his butt, but even whores don't charge that much lol) Anyway I digress. Now I get to wakeup at the ass crack of dawn and drive him into the greater LA area to have a neurologist give a second opinion and most likely do a CAT scan. They are weeding out enviromental and toxins now. If the tests come back negative the cause is most likely in his head. However the DR. is pretty sure my knee is not the cause, at most I knocked something loose, or triggered an under lying condition. Either way I have a wife that pulled the "it's just money card, and he's a really good dog" so I'm assuming to the tue of $3,000 i'll get to learn the dog is dying and pay another $1,000 to put him down. I can't talk any reason into her without sleeping on the couch or being "that horrible person" so fuck it. Now it's all about damage control. Seriously I should have been a vet, low to no insurance mal practice suites, and owners that would throw money they don't have to keep a pet alive. JACK POT!!!

Re: Almost had a really bad night
Wow sad to her about your dog.
We are blessed to have great vets without taking out a loan to treat our friends.
My Jack Russel Terrier could not even walk he was in so much pain. The Vet did accupunture and immediately he guit whining since the pain was subsided. After three sessions the old dog could run and play and has been good since. The bill less then $200 for all.
We have had our dogs x-rayed, surgery performed and lab testing all was very inexpensive.
Hope you can find some help with the dog.

Show the dog some love - it likely doesn't understand what's going on and needs some reassurance.
All the best to you and yours - that sounds like a tough situation.

Sellout, you're killing me! But seriously I'm sure you are really pretty fond of the little guy, and will do what's right for him. I've had my share of this kind of thing, and it's tough. Good luck!
Re: Almost had a really bad night
3 more since last on. they went from ever 12 hours to ever 6 to ever 4 to ever 3 to ever 2 to 20 min. I put him on seizer meds in hopes we can hold out until tomorrow. The wife has been sitting with him and feeding him vanilla ice cream to keep his blood sugar up. Hopefully the last valium will level him out until the dose of meds can kick in and stabilize him. At this point I'm hoping for good news and bracing for the worst. Running damage control between the kid and wife while trying to keep him from hurting himself. It just is what it is.. Shitty. but i'm give him butt scratches, he sure is a tough S.O.B. At least he's not in pain.

Re: Almost had a really bad night
Update: Found out today the seizures are most likey triggered from scar tissue in his brain resulting from the head trauma when he impacted my knee. They put him on medication with 2 large starter doses and a twice a day stablizer dose. Hopefully it will minimize and prevent seizers in a couple weeks when the level is stable in him system. In the mean time he can hardly walk, he can't sit still, and when he does pace it's mostly in circles in the left direction. I've decided he is suffering from the Lefts. It was a very long and stressful car ride. He lost bodily function several times. Thankfully I thought ahead and covered the cargo area in plastic tarps. fold up, throw away and keep going. But I'm pretty sure I'm not going to eat indian food for some time. He get's himself so worked up he can't keep anything down and pisses himself in his sleep. All side effects of the meds.
Last night was a long night of cleaning up dog shit as he paced back and forth in our bedroom. at least it was contained to single area and cleaned up as it happened. however I'm pretty sure the carpet is going to need to be replaced. I hate carpet so it's all good. not sure why I'm sharing that but yeah carpet and pets are just asking for trouble. I guess the part that gets me is he has never had an accident in the house ever not even as a puppy, and the LRB doesn't show pain or fear. he is seriously the toughest SOB I've ever come across and now he's weak and sloppy. I'm not sure he is in pain, he wouldn't let it show if he was.
The wife is a wreck and already blaiming me for all my wrongs and killing her dog. I'm putting a nickel bet the couch is going to be pretty comfy for a few weeks. Anyone need me to mix your album or go out on tour while the shit settles at my casa?
The good news. It is possible that after a few months LRB can be weined off the seizer medication and continue to live a normal life. Also after his body becomes balanced and adjusted to the meds he should regain motor control and bodily function. At the moment his little system is being shocked and attacked to prevent the seizers from happening and attacking his brain which would or could cause serious damage. in between seizers yesterday we fed him vanilla ice cream in hopes it would help raise his blood sugar and prevent the seizers from happening so close as they can cause perminant brain damage and ultimately death when they become to rapid.
thank you for all your support.

Carpets... I have never understood them either.
That all sounds really uncomfortable. It can be really difficult to see if a dog is in pain. They don't often show it. Hope that the recovery is not to long. It's good to hear that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Here's a couple of true but shaggy dog stories for you in the meantime:
The vanilla ice reminded me of a dog, that an old girlfriend left me with, which it turned out had a really bad (neat) trick to steal the ice cream off kids in the street when they weren't looking. I had a friend who somehow managed to train the dog out of that. I don't know how, but he said it was something to do with an elastic band. Mostly he would teach her tricks, which got me wondering about what happened next.
The dog started to ram her nose up the skirt of any woman standing next to you while you're waiting to cross the street. (Probably just checking if it was the old girlfriend) When the woman in question turned around she would not see the dog, only me with a not-guilty-but-yes-guilty agonized expression on my face... back to school dog.
Best, tony

So sorry to read that LRB's troubles still continue. Hang in there guys!
