First pic, wire with the black panel and a chicken head.

WTF's that?

To me it looks like the FS jack (and bypassing manual switch) for the vibe/trem effect.

Masco gets 10 points.

So, i've replaced a bunch of stuff, and the VT channel now sounds a lot better. i reckon there was something going on with the cathode tone splitting network on that second stage. i didn't do the 'replace one thing, then turn it on' method, so i can't say which component it was. (frankly, i can't justify spending that length of time on it!)

But as it stands, the VT channel is (and by other accounts) the weakest of the three. i can live with that.

Case is ALMOST closed. Still the reservoir can cap to replace and some PI couplers, just cuz they look like they're about to fall apart anyway.

leaky coupling cap going into the PI? (An LTP output is the 'product' of the input signals at both grids, and I'm thinking that if the PI is assymetrical, that bias being 'off' in one grid could be one explanation, but I'm just guessin')

i considered that at one point, seeing as the other two channels use the 'other side' of the PI.

Might make for an interesting 'mod', to have all channels go to one grid, leaving the other fixed to ground (via coupling cap) like the traditional long-tail.
