AmpMaker SL-18 Build Pics

Post by milkyBK370 »

Hi,

I'm reluctant to post here in case I get ripped to shreds for some obvious faux pas build-wise.

I completed this amp, my second build, a few weeks ago and have gigged the shit out of it. At first I couldn't believe how loud it was. I can easily keep up with our heavy handed drummer. I love the dynamic feel and punch from this amp.

Any comments are appreciated as I'm fairly new to this whole amp building lark.

Ripped to shreds?!?! That is as clean a build as I have ever seen or done! And...all that really matters is that it works for you.

What plan did you follow? Looks like 18 watt'ish but I didn't spend much time mapping it out.

I notice something round between the PI and power tubes that I didn't recognize. What is that?

Well done mate!

Ugly knobs. Your tubes reflect too much light...

Silly! Looks great!

Hi Dave,

It's an insert to plug the extra tube hole.

Yeah, that's a real nice looking build! I hope my first amp will look as tidy and clean as this! Did you source all the components yourself, or start with a kit?

Barry of AmpMaker recently introduced the ptfe board. It's supposed to be easier to work with. His website is worth a look; some good photos and testing procedures for beginners.

Ya, I haven't seen it in the wild yet though.

I'd love to know his secret for keeping them so cheap too compared to the normal boards.

His prices are only 2 pounds more per board versus the phenolic.

teflon sheets are almost twice as expensive as gpo from mcmaster.

I'm willing to bet money it's made of Delrin, because that's what it looks like to me. I guess one could use marketing hype and claim to have a teflon board, as Delrin does have a low percentage of PTFE in it.

Here's some reloading blocks that I use at the range which are machined from .750 thick slabs of natural Delrin, it is easy to work with.

I dunno. He's had pictures of the ptfe boards on his website for a while.

Teflon and Delrin don't look dissimilar.

I mill guitar nuts from Delrin, and it makes my second favorite picks too.

Nope. Ampmaker supplies teflon / PTFE boards - I have one. Lovely stuff to work with, but a bit bendy.

Keep your money sir ;)

Andy

P.S. - Nice looking build :)
