Transformer choices?

Post by Mark »

I rightly or wrongly believe that many Dumbles were built with either Fender transformers or Magic Parts transformers.

Model numbers such TF-130, TF-170, and TF-155 come to mind.

These transformers are still available, but I get the feeling that they are no longer favored for Dumble builds.

Why is this so and what is the transformer manufacturer of choice these days?

Thanks.
Yours Sincerely

You don't see them used because they haven't been available from what I can find since about 2003 or so. If you look at that linked transformers page, look down at the webpage date in the left hand corner, it's old. Once in a blue moon I will see a TF130 or TF170 pop up on eBay.

In past discussions here, conclusions were drawn that the TF130 & TF170 series that Dumble used were most likely generic Fender/Marshall replacements made by Pacific. However, I know that the entire Magic Parts TF series wasn't exclusively made by Pacific because I've run across some TF 50W Marshall OT trannies that were made by Heyboer.

I'm fond of Heyboer, some folks have used the New Sensor brand with great sucess , some folks have used Fender trannies by Marvel, parent of MCI and of course some have used trannies by Mercury as well.

The TF #s are Magic Parts internal stock numbers. As Tonemerc points out they've used several different manufactures over the years. I was told by Magic Parts and New Sensor that they are currently carrying transformers made by Magnetic Components. I think this changes based on who gives they the best price.

Magnetic Components sells via Triode and Amp Parts Direct just above wholesale price from Magic and NS.

We have been using Merc Mag equiv's for power as they will provide the relay winding's. And either Heybeor or Mercury OT's.

I don't think Mojo carries that version - at least not that I recall

Edcor is another possible choice

I've been using the MC "Twin Reverb" #40-18004 power transformer, and the Triad F-313x for the relays with excellent results

I've also used the Mercury (Ceriatone) OTS 100 watt PT as well... though the MC and Triade transformers together are still less then half the cost of the Mercury.

Tonemerc has ordered custom transformers from Heyboer.
Perhaps he will share an order # of the type you need?

It's not a stock item, they are custom order units directly from Heyboer.

This is the custom Heyboer Twin transformer that Jason was selling and that David cloned and sold a few as well. Mine are similar, just a tad heavier in the HT and filament. These specs put about 460V on the plates of my #183 with Gold Lion KT77's.. The great thing a custom you can choose whatever voltages, change wire colors, endbells color, etc.

Just have Heyboer clone this, a 022756 (Twin Reverb) with these specs.
