Peavey Transplant almost done/Jam added

Post by Bob-I »

I bought a Peavey Classic VT 50 for $25 on ebay a few months ago. This is a SS preamp tube power amp with built in chorus and reverb, no speakers and the back panel was missing from the cab. Of course I gutted it an used the iron cabinet and chassis for a Dumble clone.

For this one I use an HRM preamp and an ECL86 reverb. So far it's sounding excellent. I had some difficulty with the OD section, very rip your head off bright and no depth. I traced it down to the coupling between OD1 and OD2. I have the standard .0022uF -> 100K -> 250K pot but until I replaced the .0022uF with a .022uF it sounded terrible.

The ECL86 reverb is excellent. Warm and fat, not really over the top but plenty of depth, enough that I can use a 470K balance resistor instead of the 100K that Glaswerks uses. This means little to no change in the tone with this reverb.

I also found that it sounds better with more NFB. I changed the 4.7K to a 3.3K and it has more of the Dumble feel.

Here's some pics. I record some clips tomorrow when everyone's awake.

Here's a jam I recorded this afternoon. It's just the amp /guitar (Hamer 335 copy) with an SM-57 off axis about 3" away from the speaker. I used the 2x12" Celestion G12H80 cabinet.

The faceplate is just a test plate I printed at home. I'll have Kinko's print one and install that later. I also found some nice 3/64" brass rod at a Post Hardware close by that I used for the ground bus.

Looks good, Bob. That Traynor chassis has acres of real estate!

Bob-I..if it's not too much to ask can you post the schem for this amp,or at least the part where you grafted the ECL86 reverb?
Thanks a million

Hey Bob,

how does the ECL86 reverb compare to the 12AX7 single tube reverb?

Your pics make me wan't to get started with my build :D

I've already posted the ECL86 reverb on the files page although I used a smaller screen resistor on this one, and added a 200K grid load to the triode side. I'll post the complete HRM/Reverb when I'm happy with the results.

The ECL86 drives the reverb harder so you get more depth to the reverb. I also find it's fuller sounding than the 12AX7 reverb. Most important, it was fun to do.

Thanks Bob-I.........I thank you again for that reverb schem you posted on the other thread.
I'm a little short on theory so mostly I need to follow a schem to make sure it turns out right.I guess a 5k/8 ohm transformer will do for the ECL86...right?.

Great looking amp you got there.

Yes, I used a standard Fender xformer and 3 spring tank.

Good Lookin build Bob, I enjoyed the sound clip, I noticed a slight breakup of your lead note's when you pushed the amp, I liked that, What was your tube sellection on this build ?

One more question: how does the 470k resistor compared to a 100k (I assume for the dry signal?) affect the tone, or actually not affect tone?

Yea, I adjusted the gains so that I had to push a bit to get the breakup. Very sensitive that way.

I have EH12AX7's in V1 and V2, V3 is the reverb ECL86 labeled InternationalC Servicemaster, V4 is the PI which is a JJ ECC83S and the power tubes are JJ 6L6GC.
