Powertube bias Bypass Cap value in 5E3

Post by Brad166 »

I got a Mission 5E3 kit a few years back. I had the 6L6 upgrade kit sent along with it. In the kit it had a few parts to retro fit the 6l6 in the 5E3 circuit, but Im thinking back to it now. Why would Bruce have me use a 100uf/100v cathode bypass cap for the power tubes? Maybe Im missing something? Anyone know what this change would do?

Thanks!!!!!

He must have had a reason. I've known Bruce for years. He generally is very precise in component choices.

boost the bass frequency response from the output stage. This would make the amp's overdriven sound more raunchy, especially seeing as how the 5E3 is going through a (relatively) small OT.
He who dies with the most tubes... wins

The 100uf should give it a bit more punch vs that 25uf

It probably has more to do with the need for a higher voltage rating on the stock 25/25 cap.
