Another newbie, and some questions.

Post by memphisrain »

Hello all,

I'm looking to build an ODS style amp. I ordered a chassis from Brown-note and I'm planning on building his and Normster's D'lite circuit, possibly adding the jazz/rock switch, and possible channel switching. I haven't yet decided whether or not I'm going to get the parts for the circuit from brown-note, and I'm looking up the parts to get an idea on price. This leads to my question, what types of components are the best for these amps? I did a search and came up with the Vishay/Dale RN65's for resistors, and Sprague PS series for the coupling caps. Are these still the standards? Also, I went to Mouser to look the parts up, but they only carry a couple of values for the Sprague PS caps, so I'm wondering where the best place to source these are.

Thanks a bunch,

mR

Youcan either get the Orange drops from AES, http://www.tubesandmore.com or you can use Xicon MPP series caps. They sould pretty much the same. I like the MPP's myself because they're smaller than the OD's and fit nicely on small boards.

Thanks for the reply!

I actually was looking at tubesandmore.com. I've purchased stuff from them before, and had good luck. However, they didn't seems to have all of the resistors that Normster's layout calls for. I don't think they had the .047, .022, or a 0047. So, how close do these values have to be to still get the dumble tone? I mean if I geta .05 instead of a .047 for C3 is that going to be a big deal?

Thanks again,

mR

I've never been able to get everything at one place. If you go to Capacitors/Xicon you'll see the .047 and .0047 you need. They don't stock Vishay Dales so you'll have to get them at mouser. Someday I'm gonna figure out how much each amp costs in shipping charges alone :x

Another question, I may end up building my own board and I was wondering what you guys are using for spacing on you eyelets. How far are you guys separating them out?

I guess I need to update the layout. The 6PS series ODs are slightly different in value, i.e., a .0047uF is actually a .005uF. When I did the drawing, I just dragged those components onto the board.

Anyway, just use the closest values you can find and they'll most likely be the correct ones. Same on the RN65s. The actual values will be something like 151k, 221k, etc.

Eyelet spacing is 3/8". Preamp board dimensions are 8.25" x 2.675". My layout is drawn to scale so a full sized printout will give you a correct drilling template if you scale for those dimensions.

Adding relays probably won't be too difficult if you've done that before. The power supply could be taken off of the 5V taps and rectified through a small power board. The Weber relay boards are probably not appropriate for this build, though. (Not enough room.)

Thanks Normster, I was hoping you would chime in. Is the layout in the files section what you guys will be sending out with the brown-note amps? Is that basically what the sound clips were from?

Also, what is a full size printout? Is that like 11x17 paper or something? Do know the dimensions for the two other boards off hand?

I've never done anything with relays before, but I don't think it should be too awful bad, as long as I have a schematic and some pictures to get an idea. Seems like the biggest problem is getting them to work with the footswitch and not introducing noise. I'm sure I'll have a couple of questions, but this board seems to be great for that.

I'm really looking foreword to this build.

I'm working on an updated layout for the production chassis. It should be ready in the next week. The component values will all be identical to the amps we made soundclips of.

Here are the drilling templates...
