For the Zwreck and many other amps I built I have used the Dynaclone A-470-S from Triode or the Heyboer version from rj.

Tony Albany used an original A470 not the clones listed above in a recent Marshall build and swears by the old iron, haven't run across any yet. :)

Yes, the price is very high.... Most people say that the OT is the single most important tone component, so I suppose that's the place to spend money...but are they that much better than all the others, that cost half, or even one third?

Second. Great quality at a terrible price. They charge as much as they do because they can, especially for transformers that only they make where you have no other option. In ANY other case I would use Triode/Edcor/Heyboer over them and not think twice about it.

Don't forget Pacific.

Also, the Triode stuff is made by Heyboer.

I thought Triode used Magnetic Components here in Chicago.

Let me rephrase. The Dnyaco stuff is Heyboer made.

Just my opinion but compared to the cost of the entire amp, the extra cost for MM trannies isn't that huge. And if you're trying to build the absolute best amp you can, why not get the best? Now; I'm not saying MM trannies ARE better sounding, I don't know. But IF I thought they were I'd spend that little extra in a heartbeat and not think twice about it. It only hurts once.

I guess it depends on 'why you're building' and what you expect to get out of the amp. I've cobbled together amps from 'leftovers' and had them sound great but if I'm trying to build 'the best 'Wreck evar!' I'm not worrying about an extra $50 or $100. I might own/play that amp for 20+ years.

Let me repeat, I'm not saying MM trannies are better. I'm just saying that I wouldn't let a little extra cost prevent me from using the best components I can.
Early brewers were primarily women, mostly because it was deemed a woman's job. Mesopotamian men, of some 3,800 years ago, were obviously complete assclowns and had yet to realize the pleasure of brewing beer.

The MM set will run you nearly $600 with shipping. That's exhorbitant in my book. You can get 2-3 sets of the other wreck transformers for that $$$.

The MM iron is very good in my experience and I have purchased enough that the quantity discount makes them competitive. I can't see why a dealer such as myself wouldn't pass on some of those savings.
