OD 715s vs Mallory 150's

Hi all,

All the recent talk about caps got me to finally place an order for some Mallory 150's. I originally built my Express with 715s since Guitarpicker? reported he had those in his original TW. For $10 I replaced all those with the 150's this afternoon. I am very pleased with the result. As you all know there is no real way to objectively relate the differences in ones subjective experience with an amp. I will just describe the difference as being more musically inspiring in a number of ways. It is definitely an improvement for the better. Before, I rarely used or needed to use the bright switch. Now I actually find the bright switch quite a nice feature that will get considerable use. I also think the tone controls, both the amp and guitar, are more versatile now. Just one more really nice step in the right direction toward better tone.

Thanks, Robert. That's an interesting insight about the bright switch. What values did you use for the switch? Also, have you tried other cap types for the treble cap?

I use a 180pF cap for the bright switch. You should experiment with other values. The Trainflex scheme has a depth mod that uses a .047 cap. Wow does that boost the amp. Maybe a bit much, I will try some other values in there though. It seems the treble cap area can have quite an impact on the tone.

I missed that on the schematic... Interesting... I'll have to try something like that...

Do the tone controls still work with a .047 "treble" cap value?

hello there, actually the value for the cap would be a .0047mf--this is the same value used on the "bright" channel of some marshall amps and gives a very nice crunchy mid tone esp. with the vol. control turned up at least 1/2 or slightly more. this will also make your pickups/amp howl and scream so beware! rh

I did mean .047 not .0047, although that may well be a nice value to use. Check the Trainflex schematic.

Hi ALL,
It's been awhile since my last post.I finaly got around to replaceing the pre-amp board in my Express clone.I changed it to black formica I ve been useing this stuff for awile and it works great....not to thick not to thin. Anyway.......I changed the board and the caps to mallory 150's and I must say I agree with Roberts findings Totaly.I haven't got alot of time on them yet but I prefer them to 715's that were in there originaly.

Just on the side; how could the two inputs in the Trainflex ( Note 1: Alternate Input Structure ) be mixed together for the following stage? Is adding mixing resistors the only way?
