noob.....marshall dsl or vox ac30

Post by bobalu »

soo getting first tube amp and i'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I can't decide on whether to get a vox ac30 or marshall dsl. both are classics with great sound. vox is running around 800 and the dsl head is 600. style of playing is classic rock, reggae, jazz, punk etc...and lots of pedals!!! any info will help.....

Since this is a forum dedicated to folks building amps, the most likely answer is you need to build one of each and it will only cost you twice as much as you would spend if you actually just went out and bought them....

I know that's a smart a$$ answer, but if you are going to buy a finished amp, just go play through them until you hear what you want. If your ears are happy, then you have made the right decision.

Around here there are several iterations of the amps you have mentioned. The Trainwreck Rocket is like the best part of a VOX AC-30 and none of the issues. They are extremely pedal friendly and great amps. There are a lot of guys that would build you one if that tempts you.

I saw Joe Bonamassa last year using a pair of DSL's, rented backline.
SOunded pretty bloody great..
My money would be on the AC30, theyre pretty versatile, and dont let the chinese build bother ya either, i have heaps of gigging buddies using them, great amps.
There ya go, a vote for both!

If running cost is a consideration, the DSL power tubes are likely to last far longer than those in an AC30. Also microphonics and tube rattle will be less of a problem with a head than an combo. Pete.

You'll get a far wider audience of Vox and Marshall users (and thus, responses) at thegearpage.net; many of us are members there as well.

from a service point of view.

The DSL is crap. multi circuit boards ton's of problems with the PCB traces and rectifier section. cracks and pops = the $600 price point.

The AC-30 is a great amp. they aren't built like the vintage but they aren't often on the bench getting fixed.
