hey that clear stuff. is that heatshrink or just some kind of tubing?
i need me some of that.

Clear Teflon tubing, hard to find, try Michael Percy - just goggle him.

That teflon tubing stuff is awesome. We use it at PAiA in the tube amp projects to connect to shield the wire runs from tube socket to board. You literally can't burn the stuff (if you do, don't breath the fumes!) and it will never breakdown or arc. Plus I think it looks neater than open floating leads, kinda like how well applied heatshrink looks especially tidy..

I wish it came in white instead of clear. It likes to suck in flux through capillary action and that can look a bit skanky.

yes yes that's what I need.
looks like hndme has it in a variety of colors.

what gauge do you usually get?

Someone help me out with transformer/choke placement.
I read that the goal was to make sure none of the laminations were in the same plane. If you look at the way I have my transformers and choke positioned, you will see that I have accomplished that. The laminations of the choke and OT are perpendicular to the laminations of the PT, and the OT and choke are in different parallel planes.
Was my information wrong?

Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

are you using a choke input filter or a capacitor input filter?

It's a Bassman clone. It has several big capacitors and a choke, which you can see in the photo.

Re: Incredibly Ignorant Questions About 5f6a Clone Filter Caps
well there's very little ac current in the choke if it comes after the reservoir capacitor.
So if you have the space you can just stick it in between the pt and the ot lengthwise and it'll help shield the one from the other.
It's fine how it is but it's free shielding if you haven't drilled yet.
Your preamp and power tube layout makes sense.
Hmm, I just back and looked and ideally you'd want the rectifier tube in between the pt and the ot as well. You really don't want to have the rectifier current loop under the output transformer.

I guess there's no reason why I can't move the rectifier.

Here's a new idea. Not quite as cute, but I like it. The 12ay7 is way out on the end alone, far from anything that can bother it. The rectifier is in front of the choke so it will be visible through the top of the head.

Re: Incredibly Ignorant Questions About 5f6a Clone Filter Caps
with those preamp tubes like that, are you doing point to point on terminal strips or are you using a circuit board? If a board, your board will cover at least one tube socket so you will have a hard time soldering leads and tweaking.
Why not just run all the tubes in a row? what is the reasoning for the triangular pattern, which will also have signal wires running in a circular pattern.

I use 20awg bus so I think I got 20, but that was long ago and I don't recall, but 18 would seen odd for me to order. Didn't know Handmade had colors, but looks like just in 18 and bigger.diagrammatiks wrote:yes yes that's what I need.

Look at the Marshall JTM that is a 5b6 and follow that layout.

Using a laydown power transformer, it doesnt affect the orientation of the OT. Theyre on different planes already.
