Reverb Unit.....

Just curious, because I do not think I have ever really heard a "Stand Alone" reverb unit. Maybe I have on a recording, no doubt. But face to face, I have never had any experience with one. Compared to say a Fender Deluxe Reverb, do they sound much different/better than a Fender on board reverb circuit.?
Have any of you guys ever built one.? I guess there is a schematic somewhere, but I was looking at this lay-out from Triode, and it got me wondering.
So what do you guys think :

Are they very versatile.?

Reverb unit have been my first project with tubes a while ago, I could not live without it (I hate dry signal) and it's alway on when I'm playing.

If I had to build one now (I gain little experience over the years) it would be nicer but this one work fine. For me the Reverb unit worth the investment. You need some good low noise preamp tubes and the wire dressing need to be well done. The 6K6 power tube is a must over the 6V6, the NOS one are pretty cheap anyway (under $10.00), go for it, you wont regret. I build this one from scratch using a Weber chassis, board and transformers, the Triode American made transformers where not available back then, but I would go for the Magnetic components transformers available from Triode over the Chinese Tx.

Is there a power trans and output trans or just a reverb driver?

you'd need a power transformer for a standalone unit. I'm not sure if it would be safe to capacitively couple a stand-alone unit. The fenders had output transformers.

Here's one I built about 2 years ago and still use. (The cabinet is made out of recycled drawer ends from a local recycling centre, and covered with gingham)

The clips are with my 5G9 Clone

Its vitally important to use a good grounding scheme - I tried several different ones before settling on R.G.s ground method, and I followed it to the letter.

Also important to use trannies with end bells because its a sensitive circuit. Also a PT that enables FW rectification is better than the stock 1/2 wave rectified version. I used a PT that was 240-0-240 @ 100mA (and 6.3V @ 2A)

I built a replica of my vintage 60's Fender reverb unit. You can easily find the schematic and layout for eyelet board on the net. I have been into woodworking for quite a while, so making the cabinet was simple. The main issue is the cost of components. This is not a cheap way to avoid the cost of a commercial unit. I did it just for the fun and experience.

I mounted the reverb pan on springs attached to posts like in the original.

I did not realize Kazoo players used Reverb.......
Nice units you have there. I hear you about cost. I can either afford to do what I do, and it is a matter of it being a hobby, or I have parts that I THINK I can make work. It is such a lovely effect, would be nice to successfully build one of these old guys........

costs of parts is actually pretty low if you can recycle a chassis and a cab or box.

I think the output transformer runs in at 15 dollars.

power transformer is 40-50 maybe.

Recycling parts would help save some bucks. I fashioned my chassis from some 2" X 2" aluminum angle stock I got at a hardware store. Two long lengths and two end pieces pop riveted together.

The reverb pan will run about $20.00 and then there are the tubes. At least I had some left over plywood, tolex, and grill cloth from a speaker cab I built.

If you choose to model the original Fender I can post some gut shots of the board and chassis layout.

6V6 in there at the mo'. Think the plate is running at about 340 IIRC. I used a 5k OT

And here I was thinking you were part of some awesome, underground, Blues-Rock loving, group of crazy good Kazoo players, that were about to turn the Rock-N-Blues world on its end. The second coming of Stevie Ray Vaughan perhaps.
