Finally starting my Rocket Combo build!

Post by Tone_Chaser »

First off, I just want to say thank you to all of you guys on here. This is a great forum and there are some really supportive and knowledgeable people here.

I've been sourcing parts for a while now and I am finally starting my build. I don't have everything yet but I'll continue to source parts as I go. This is going to be kind of a slow build and I am looking forward to it. I built a 68 Plexi clone a couple of years ago and enjoyed that so I'm looking forward to starting this one.

Having said that, I just started tonight and already made my first mistake! I bought one of the new economy chassis from RJ (which are a great bargain) and drilled it out myself using the Rocket diagram on the forum. When I got done I realized I drilled the holes for the mains and fuse on the opposite side from the transformers.

Oh well, nothing the faceplate won't cover. :)

I'll post some pics as I go and then the final. I built the cabinet last year and just need to cover it.

Talk to you all soon!

Good luck with your build. Be safe and happy playing!

I should be getting my last package from RJ in a couple of days for my Express build so I'm right behind ya.

Cheers,

Know that would have been fine Mark,Im taking your advice, resting and reading.I can now play my amps in a wheelchair. The arm rest kinda pops off and give me some elbo room. One funny thing,I have to wear a eletromagnetic belt device for three hours a day.Not thinking I switched on one of my amps and you could here a cycling screeching sound. Then I relized its not the amp having problems its this device. It is supposed to cause bone growth at a faster pace.Anyway Im hanging in there.Thank God for TAG,Keeps me sane,Mikey

Barry,

Are you going with a 1-12 combo for that Rocket build? You built the cabinet a year ago you said what design style did you go with, Marshall or Matchless?

Oh Ouch! Damn Mikey, hope you get to feeling better soon buddy. Will say a little prayer for a speedy recovery. I'm thinking a rocket build might be just what the Dr. ordered.

Thanks for the well wishes guys, and Mike, DAMN!!! That really sucks, I'm glad you are going to be OK.

Mark, I went with the Matchless look. I'm covering it in red elephant tolex and the sound board is going to be covered with salt pepper grill cloth with cream tolex at the top. I'm planning on using a Celestion Gold Alnico 12" speaker. Black faceplate with cream Fender knobs.

I'm going to use this amp as the clean/country sound in my Eagles tribute band and then I'm making a matching JTM 45 combo for the more rockin' Eagles songs. It will be the Marshall style.

Mikey you follow your wife's orders you hear! :)

Barry sounds like you will have a great looking amp cabinet. This amp works well for country sound. Do you ususally mike your cab? If you don't get enough clean headroom that can be addressed when the amp is finished. I would not alter the circuit until after you hear how the Rocket sounds in its stock form.

Thanks. That's the plan. I am going with the reverb and VVR but everything else is stock. We do always mic everything and use in-ear monitors so volume shouldn't be an issue.

Going with reverb and VVR, oh your going to like your amp.

I can hear your comments already! :)

Yes if your miking this amp your going to be just fine.

I sometimes go back and forth with running a 12AT7 in the reverb makes it very subtle with the short medium decay tank.

Barry - I feel your pain, I have made so many chassis with holes in the wrong place... makes me so mad!

Whoa Mikey, that story just makes me cringe... ouch brother! I had some knee repair done once and they used one of the electro-shock units to stimulate bone growth... but I think really the therapist girl just like to watch my face as she revved that thing up... take your time get healthy and say your thank you's that you survived that one... sounds like it was close!

Eagles tribute band - who gets to be Joe Walsh? I think I would want to be Don Felder or maybe Randy Meisner.

OK - back on track - Rocket combo should be very cool. Looking forward to watching this one come together.
