Huzzah. A decent score.

Post by Alexo »

Just thought I'd do a little boasting.

Saw a CL ad the other day for a quad of NOS Tung Sol 5881's for 70 bucks. OK, I think, I don't need any 5881's at the moment, but that's a deal good enough to jump on.

I hook up with the guy, and he has one of those big boxes copier paper often ships in - overflowing with unused tubes in their original boxes.

So we negotiate a little, he shows me some other odds and ends, an unbuilt Heathkit SS stereo unit, some power supply kits, weird old coaxial 12" Utah speakers, etc. He was looking to get a few hundred bucks for the tubes, minimum, I got him down a little lower and threw in an old signal tracer converted into a guitar amp that I happened to have in my trunk, and we both walked away happy.

Normally these old tube lots just turn up a ton of used TV and radio tubes, with maybe one 12AX7, or a couple 6V6's and 5U4's buried in them, but not so this time, this collection actually had some useful, well-regarded full-on audio tubes. At last!

Here are some highlights:

TWO QUADS of NOS USA Tung Sol 5881's, NIB.

EIGHT RCA 6BQ5's, new in boxes.

4 NOS Tung Sol 12AX7's, new in boxed.

6 GE 12AY7's, new in boxes.

10 NIB 6AQ5's (including a quad of Tung's) - 6AQ5's are still cheap, but I love 'em!

And a bunch of slight oddballs - 5V4's and 5R4's (hard to get good data on exactly what the max filter cap spec is on these) a bunch of 6Y6's and 6080's, and a whole bunch of weird little noval and 7-pins, many of them sort of variants of 12AT7 sections, with only one triode, or diodes attached, etc., lots of 6U8's and 6AN8's, pentode/triodes...

Maybe I'm eccentric in my enthusiasm for Tung Sol, even before this score, I was rather enamored with them, they made some excellent, excellent, tubes, and they can be pretty hard to come by.

I keep feeling torn between having overpaid and underpaid, so I think it must have been a fair deal. In any case, I think it may be time to tackle that high-power Twin build i've been daydreaming about!

Odd thing is that almost all of these tubes were made in October, 1958. The original owner must have made a visit to the factory and just loaded up, the boxes are white, military looking deals, but prefixed with "JTL." Maybe the telephone equivalent of "JAN?" Dunno.

End-boast. :)

LOL thanks! I'd post 'em if I didn't just lose the family digital camera on a flight to New Orleans last week. I swear!

...in other news, anyone looking to trade their digital camera for some tubes? ;)

Very nice Alexo, some great tubes there. I always seem to miss out on these great NOS finds some of the guys here make, get beaten to an auction, etc. but I did make a nice score recently (and for very good prices too!). So since we are bragging ;-)...

[BOAST]
3 NOS Mullard GZ34
3 NOS RCA Black Plate 5Y3GT
2 NOS RCA Black Plate 5U4G
[/BOAST]

I blew it on some very nice NOS Siemens EL34 XF2s recently but am still looking for some.

Just the two quads of Tungsol 5881 and the four Tungsol long plate 12AX7s would retail for $1,000.

Ask me how I know this, I just bought a quad of Tungsol 5881s for $330 plus $50 matching to a specific voltage.

I quit bragging after I found the 21 different EL34's, mostly Amperex and Telefunken, and many in quads. Recently I also found eight 6550's (4-RCA, two Sylvania, two Tung-Sol) and more Tele and Amperex AX7's. Recently at a hamfest I scored two NOS GE 5U4's, different 6SL7's (Raytheon and Sylvania mostly), a few ST-shaped 5V4's, some 5751's, an RCA 6EU7, a Brimar 5Y3 and some different 12AZ7 and 12AY7's. The Brimar has different internals than any other 5Y3 I've seen, perhaps I'll post some pics. Also I noticed that while AZ7's were cheap, it seems like AY7's have gone through the roof..

Wow!

Well I nearly pooped my pants when I saw 6 boxes marked "RCA 6AC7" stuck together - had a flash of dyslexia and thought they were 6CA7's. But that would just be greedy.

i actually know a place where a guy has a rather huge collection of very old audio equipment. back in the town i grew up in theres an old part of town and he has a shop there. stuff in there has like an inch of dust on it and he said he had any tube i needed. too bad this was info to a 16 year olds ears at the time or i would have jumped on it.

I'm pretty sure hes still in the same shop and am planning to see the folks this summer. maybe stop in and clean out his tube collection of any guitar amp tubes while i'm in town.
If it ain't broke don't fix it, mod it :)
