Can someone explain the obvious stuff to me like
1) What is the abrev. HRM mean? I know that some have the internal tone stacks and they are non HRM?
2) What is the skyline, the internal tone stack?
3) Which schematic would get me closest to Talk to your daughter type tone (if I could play like him!
4) I have a trashed Black face Bassman I'd love to turn into something useful, would the existing iron be good or is something more marshall more in line?
5) Does anyone have an idea on what is the Ultraphonics mod he has done on Fenders?
Thanks!!

1. Hot Rubber Monkey - adds tone stack to overdrive section and changes most of the other overdrive section's tube support values.
2.Skyline refers to a different main tone stack - for the most part it's the difference you see in the values between early and later designs.
3.My best guess is a non-hrm with the later(Skyline) tonestack. Don't forget the Robben Ford modification that uses a resistor instead of a choke in the PS.
4.Bassman transformers are ideal for building a 50W clone. In fact, they may be THE best.

If Robben doesnt use th HRM then who famous would be using the HRM?
Great about the Bassman, I catually have two of those amps lying around but one is vert clean.
Ultraphonics mod is something HAD has been doing to studio players Fender amps. Not sure exactly what it is but I think it has something to do with the EQ and ground path. gotta be some smoke thrown in there 2

If you listen to the various recordings that Robben has done over the years you can hear (at least on Mystic Mile) that two different Dumbles were used. My gut feeling is that Robben Jing Chi stuff is definately HRM, older stuff could be some HRM and some nonHRM.drz400 wrote:

At this point in time, I prefer the HRM based tone. More focussed and intervals and chords sound better in HRM voicing. It is more articulate than nonHRM.
A friend owns a Ultraphonics Bassman and it was ok, but I prefer my own stuff over that particular amp. I thought it was a tad buzzy. No smoke in the ultraphonics, but I was told a LOT of goop......

We covered that in the PM. You can build w/o the HRM and add it later if you choose. I like it myself but my little Princeton sized amp doesn't have one and it sounds GREAT.drz400 wrote:Can someone explain the obvious stuff to me like

skyliner tone stack, look at the 97 schematic.2) What is the skyline, the internal tone stack?
First you get Robbin's hands, then build a non-HRM amp. Then take it to Dumble for weekly tweaking.3) Which schematic would get me closest to Talk to your daughter type tone (if I could play like him!
There is not better amp to transplant a Dumble into.4) I have a trashed Black face Bassman I'd love to turn into something useful, would the existing iron be good or is something more marshall more in line?
Nope. Sorry.5) Does anyone have an idea on what is the Ultraphonics mod he has done on Fenders?

Grab Normster's layout for his Bassman transplant. Excellent work.
