Re: miniHRM evolution
Monstrous 5 watt tone! Wow, having trouble believing that came out of a single 84'! Brilliant!
Re: miniHRM evolution
It was instant smile when I hit an E chord when first time trying the amp with 12'' Delta Pro. I have two amps connected to the 2x12'' box. Today I will try both 12'' connected to 86-Special at rehearsals.azatplayer wrote:Monstrous 5 watt tone! Wow, having trouble believing that came out of a single 84'! Brilliant!

86 Special Duet
Mat,
DaGeezer designed and built the HoSo56 which is one of his favorite amps using a push/pull EL84 setup. I know he ran the Tweed Overdrive Special thru that LTPI and poweramp & IIRC, he liked the tone of it.
I put a SCH editable version here:
http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.ph ... 46.new#new
So this is your preamp & OD into the HoSo56 LTPI and power amp. If the idea appeals to you at all ......... perhaps you could edit what you'd want to change & I would be happy to draw up a layout for it.
I built the HoSo56 in several versions using EL84, 6BM8, 6V6, 5881, & 6AQ5 tubes. I liked all of them.
The PPMIV is needed on this design, IMO. Or ....... you could use a VVR also.
With respect, 10thtx
Just putting an idea on the table for consideration only. You may already have something in mind. I called it the 86 Special Duet simply to distinguish it from your single ended amp. It's just a "draft" name for discussion.I'm slowly gathering parts for my next build. It will be as the 86-Special but with 2xEL84 push/pull. I've never earlier built a 2xEL84 power amp.

I tried the 86-Special with two Delta Pros today and the sound was very good. Amazingly the volume was just enough for the band reherseals. We did not play too loud tonight. I made again a little recording (with delay on the loop) to show how nicely this amp cleans with volume pot of the guitar. The pu-selector of my 339 is in middle position and the volumes are at 5. Then I crank the bridge pu volume and in the end of the clip I switch to bridge position only. On the clean part I did dig in the strings quite heavily but the sound did not break too much. There is a phase flavour on the soundclip. I think it comes because the two deltas in parallel and the mic picks them little differently hmm.. It almost sounds of the 'phozer' effect from runoffgroove site. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10333523

Re: 86 Special Duet
excellent, just beautiful clip. clean is great, and just like i expected from dumble tone stack + A class amp (the best clean to me), but this distortion is incredible also! very smooth and fluid! great!mat wrote:. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=10333523
Re: miniHRM evolution
Mat,
I added a layout to the schematic a couple of posts up. And the SCH versions are here:
http://www.el34world.com/Forum/index.ph ... #msg102590
Again, this is simply a DRAFT to use for discussion. So look for errors and compare schematic with layout.

Re: miniHRM evolution
Just wondering what it would take to get an EL34 to play nicely in this rig, or maybe a pair of 84's in parallel? That coud be pretty righteous.
tube brands??
Congratulations on building a great sounding amp Mat. This looks like a project to emulate.
What tube brands are being used (Oh please don't let that EF86 be a $200 Telefunken
)
Thanks

Re: miniHRM evolution
There was no success at Hoffman-forum driving a single EL34 with HRM style preamp (mini-HRM). Two EL84 in parallel was better IIRR. I'm going for 2xEL84 push pull for my next build.azatplayer wrote:Just wondering what it would take to get an EL34 to play nicely in this rig, or maybe a pair of 84's in parallel? I tried a Celestion G12-65 on my small 86-Special combo. While being better than the earlier it was not as good as with the delta pro. I think there is something with the 86-Special and delta pro that matches together nicely. I think the delta keeps the sound focused enough so that it does not break too much.
Today I will get most of the parts for the build but I'm going to make the chassis myself so it will take some time to finish the amp. Will get back when I have more info.
edit: the EF86 is svetlana/SED

Re: miniHRM evolution
Yes Mat, ive been trying for a long time to get a great EL34 SE thing going on, but just have not got it happening yet.
I ordered some trannies last week to build your amp, it just sounds so good. I got a 3K primary wind done as well so i can try parallel EL84's. Just hoping the preamp has enough juice to drive the grids of 2 tubes. Should be ok i think. My idea is 5 watt/10watt setting. Both very usable wattages for small club gigs, and that tone is outrageous!
Will have to invest in the Delta Pro to see what all the fuss is about, appparently a EV clone that outdoes EV!!

Re: miniHRM evolution
Many here thinks the deltas are too dark for the D-style amps. I like one with my main amp (nonHRM Skyline 2x6L6). I think I prefer a bit darker sounds anyway.azatplayer wrote:Yes Mat, ive been trying for a long time to get a great EL34 SE thing going on, but just have not got it happening yet.

The 86-Special sounds good only with my deltas. If there is a lighter/cheaper alternative I'm more than happy to try one. Any suggestions anyone ?

Re: miniHRM evolution
Would be great to hear the 65 if you had a chance to record it. Great speakers for taking the top off a bright amp.
Re: miniHRM evolution
I'll try to record something within few days. I cannot crank even the small combo at home so it will be a low volume recording.azatplayer wrote:Would be great to hear the 65 if you had a chance to record it. Great speakers for taking the top off a bright amp.

I had only a lousy SM57-copy on hand to record the clip. It cuts the highs quite a bit.
To me the Eminence Delta Pro 12A is still THE speaker for the 86-Special.

Re: miniHRM evolution
Thanks man, yes i agree the delta is killer. But the tone is there, ive not yet built a dumble clone, been meaning to get to it, but not just yet, i do however have use for a 5 watter. A lot of my gigs are small clubs, even the bigger stuff is often with percussion of a light handed drummer, more vocally focused. The 5 watts is more than enough in those instances.
I had a Mesa Lonestar a few years ago that i used the 5 watt setting heaps on. Was a great sounding amp.
I have a lot of different speakers, will be interesting to hear them when this amp is built!
many thanks man, Don
