Fave metal film resistors?

Post by azatplayer »

Ive used the PRP resistors and found nothing i hated about them, certainly look nice in a build too.
Tho at 65 cents each you tend to be a little more careful with them.
Whats evryone using with mf's?
What should be avoided?

I've used PRP MFs for several years. They seem to be very quiet and uncolored, flat extended response but not buzzy. If you're looking for coloration, you won't find it here. Like a Telefunken tube, some like 'em and some don't.

In Dumble builds I use the "de rigeur" Dale RN65 in plates and cathodes. Except in the PI where I use Takman CF. I have not tried the Takman MF but I would have no hesitation based on their CFs.

What to avoid? The cheapo no-name s**t the average electronics store stocks. And especially those tiny so-called 1/2W resistors of any construction, mostly from India, which open up in plate duty.

Stay with the established brands when shopping Mouser et al. and watch the point of origin.

Anything based on '60s or earlier designs I have got to the point where I try to use the same construction type, which is almost always carbon comp. These vary a whole lot, beware. Current construction that I have tried is quiet and fairly close tolerance, some warmth. NOS can be really great, quiet, in tolerance, nice warmth, but some can be noisy, out of spec and generally useless.

I'm confused, as usual, - are these to be avoided?

Resistors

I might be biased but Welwyn have always been sticklers for quality standards. For ratings, if they say 1W they mean at least 1 W.
(I was an apprentice at Welwyn in the 70's). :D

Ordered a bunch of Beyschlag from Conrad to try out. Will see what the shipping ends up, but theyre certainly a lot less money than the PRP's.

I liked working with the metal film Vishay Dale CCF60's I got from Mouser on my last build.
I used the 1 watt size, 1% tolerance.

Don't know anything about their performance other than they seem to work well and are high quality constructed.

They are the tan, five band.

I like the IRC GS-3 metal films (the two cylindrical black ones on the far right of the pic, because they have the value stamped right on the resistor - those darn color codes can get so confusing - 'Bad Boys Rape Our Young Girls But Violet Gives Willingly' is how I learned it... 8)
