Looking for schematics with ef86 as V2 or V3

Post by Kagliostro »

I'm looking for a guitar amp schematic that have an ef86 not as V1

but as V2 or V3

something like in the Matchless Clubman that uses a (paralleled) 12ax7 double triode as V1 and a 6SH7 pentode as V2

Have you schematic with the ef86 in that position ?

or do you know amps that use that architecture ?

Many Thanks

Selmer Zodiac has EF86 in both channels as second stage :

My cousin has a Selmer Zodiac. At least I think it is a Zodiac.
It is the size of a AC30.

It has these push buttons for different effects and tones.
Also has a "magic eye" on the front that glows green and to the beat of the vibrato or tremolo or rotating tone.

It is a very good sounding amp as a bonus.

Don't let that smoke out!

Would you be driving a tone stack with the pentode? Just curious...

This one has always looked like a fun amp:

Many Thanks also to you KellyBass

No, my interest was about to "study" this particular architecture

I want to build a stand alone preamp with a pentode not in first position, and also try to insert the pentode/triode control as from Merlin indications

I believe that one of the Dr. Z amps also uses an EF86 in V2, after a 12ax7. Not sure which - Prescription maybe?

The good Dr. posts here occassionally. Perhaps he would give us some of his thoughts on this type of architecture.

That sounds like an interesting project! I've also read Merlin's chapter on small signal pentodes and am curious.

Here's a good article to read:

Thanks for that link, I have never seen that page before.
The link to the Selmer is great too, that opened up a whole new world!
If I understand Merlin's suggestions for the small pentode in V2 correctly it is to use it primarily for tone, rather than for gain. That's pretty cool.

I have one schematic somewhere where EF86 was presented the V2 position. Never experienced with that though...
If I remember correctly it was like guitar into 12AX7 wired as a cathode follofer, TMB-tone stack, EF86 and volume control to SE EL84. I'll try to find it, haven't seen anything like that before actually.
Can some Guru enlighten me what are the pros and cons of having a cathode follower first in the signal chain?
