Gils Dumble pictures are my fault...our good fortune

Post by ampman1961 »

Greetings all...
I am Billy Yates, shop owner and fortunate individual who has the privledge of knowing Gil. Great friend and very intelligent, gifted engineer & guitarist. I thought it would be a good idea for Gil to post the pictures for the benefit of all. It helped clear up some misconceptions and inuendo. I enjoyed the procees of opening up the amp and de-mystifying its contents. I liken this to opening King Tut's tomb in a wierd sort of way.

Some folks might have the take that it isn't cool to do this.
Oh well, I don't agree. Once the amp became the property of my client, its content becomes public domain but his identity does not.
We should not have to pay for information. I mean after all, it's a friggin guitar amp, right? What is the big deal? HAD is very accomplished and probably knows more about his craft than most of us will ever know, but the way he went about protecting his design was a bit wierd and hence we unravel the story, resistor by resitsor. Show us that carrot Howie and we'll chew it up eveytime.
Our collective interests dictate that knowledge is essential. Enough of that drivel. It's a blast doing what we do. Tube amps. It's good on all levels.
I got back on the internet a couple of months ago after a year hiatus and am glad that I did. I have met many talented folks on the various forums that I attend. What a great network! I look forward to a good hang here.
I'm glad everyone enjoyed the photos.
Cheers,
Billy Yates

Your contribution to my amp lust was the ultimate! Tut's tomb is right, I've never been that close to a Dumble's guts in my life! Thankyou sir you are a true gentleman.

Billy, thanks for all your efforts, we ALL appreciate it here at this community. I especially like your comment, "...after all, it's a friggin guitar amp,..." that puts it into a realistic perspective.

What'd I miss. Is someone upset about this? I mean other than HAD himself if he's even aware.

Personally I'm happy that they were posted, but I have no intention of copying them component by component, solder joint by solder joint. What fun would that be?

No, no one is upset that I know of...that was just a general statement regarding discussions I have had with people who get upset about plagerism-like things. Meanwhile, we all just want to have fun.

You won't find much of that here... :D I do have a question about #124. You've probably heard more Dumbles than I will for the rest of my life. Is #124 a very good sounding one, average, below average, and how's it with a Strat?

edit: Thanks Billy!

Greets...
I played my Les Paul, Telecaster, Stratocaster & Carruthers CSA (Robben Ford) through it and you know what? They all sounded great. The amp really let the tonality of the guitars through without too much "color" if that makes sense. It just seemed open and natural. The OD is complex without being mushy. All notes are well defined...typical Dumble thing and probably one of the best sounding that I've seen.
