KT66 rattle

Post by Luthierwnc »

I have a homebrew head with a pair of KT66's. One of them has a wicked rattle within a couple notes on either side of C (525Hz). Holding it with a sock completely cures the problem but doesn't help my playing technique.

The tubes are Chinese from several years ago but only have around 50 hours on them. Other than the rattle, they sound great. The amp is a head with the tubes pointing up. They have a lot of space between each other and the other components. There aren't any hold-down springs and the beartrap clamps won't work because of the tapered base. Other possibilities are silicone around the base, tube dampers, Marshall style coverlets, ?

If you have any good ideas for holding these guys still, I'm all ears. Even if I need to replace them, I'd like to have a permanent fix.

Thanks, Skip

Hi Skip:
I was going to suggest those tube dampner gizmos. Maybe just squeeze a big ring of RTV (silicone) all around the center of it to change the resonance of the tube? RTV is good for 700F-800F IIRC and shouldn't create a problem smoke wise.

Hi Dan,

I have used GE Silicone II which seems to work pretty well. Usually just a glob around the base (as per Lord Valve's suggestion). I was wondering was if a mechanical device to pull them into the base would also be a good idea. These mutha's are pretty large so the EL34 types won't cup over the tops.

The one on the left is the offender.
