Introduction

Post by JDJ »

Hi, my name is Jeff D. Jones and I live in North Carolina. I've enjoyed building a few amps and I saw your forum. Looks great!

Here's my latest project:

Yes, that's a wooden chassis! It's a brown Deluxe 6G3.

I'm looking forward to looking around your forum! :)

Welcome Jeff! That's a great looking amp and I'll bet it sounds even better. Nice work. I really like the blue Sozos too; great sound to them. I'm looking forward to using them again.

I've seen it on other boards.
I have thought of doing the same, that wooden chassis.

Thank you for joining and stunning work!

I've been thinking of another project since this one is nearly done. I could probably use an EL84 amp or something of that nature. I would like to try a very simple circuit with a short signal path. And then I came across the TW discussions. Seems intriguing... this is how it begins, I suspect! :D

Very tasty! Excellent work! Blackplate military 6V6s, yessir! Welcome, you will fit right in here. I have a '62 6G3 which doesn't look half as nice..

I see more people using tube vibration damping rings in combos, will have to try some.

Just curious if there are any issues with external noise using a non-shielded chassis.

Just curious if there are any issues with external noise using a non-shielded chassis.
Actually, I posted about this issue at TGP prior to the build. Adam Grimm of Satellite Amps said the following:
You can build it on a wood chassis if you have to. Some chassis don't shield very well anyways. Grounding will be a concern, but it can be dealt with. I wouldn't bother with copper foil or shielded paint. If it was me, I would use a large brass plate behind the controls to act as a grounding bus for them. For the tube sockets & transformers), I would probably use a piece of plate metal (aluminum or steel) and cut it to size, then punch holes and mount it on top of the wood chassis. I would then use a large wire to connect the two together so they are one common grounded plane. Use wood for the rest.
The link is here: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showth ... p?t=772292.

Also, some folks posted photos:

[img:1160:419]http://www.antique-radios.net/radpix/ak/ak434ft.jpg[/img]

And then I found that audiophiles reverred wood chassises in some circles. And I got the following response from another board:
Considering how poor the grounding is on the original and how the chassis can not work as a shield because it is a current conductor, I would say if he uses a modern grounding scheme then it will be better then original.
Anyway, I took a risk and it worked out. I'm not having any shielding issues. :)

Thanks for the welcome. And I'm open to suggestions for the next project!

That is so cool Jeff. Funny how we sometimes get hung up on using tried and true "traditional" materials. I'll let you know how my cow-hide tag-board experiment works out. :D

Hey Jeff, I read that thread you linked to (I'm a sucker for 'outside the square ideas').

aleclee has one brutal tag line doesn't he?!!

"Some people have a destiny that involves nothing more than serving as a cautionary tale to others."

i thought it was his answer to your question!, but his answer was to use a cake pan!!! now that's what I call cooking up some tone!!! i hope his tag line isn't a self full filling prophecy though...
