orientation of OT primary leads???

Post by power chord hack »

I'm installing a new tranny in my AC15.
I'm not sure how to orient the primary leads. I know where the center tap goes.
Here's what I don't know:
One lead from each side of the primary goes to one of the power tubes (i.e. one lead goes to one tube and the other lead goes to the other tube). Does it matter which lead goes to which tube?
I don't think it matters but I'm not sure.

Here's a schem. see pg 5.

Someone else correct me if I am wrong, but as your amp has no negative feedback it will not matter which way you orient the leads.

Only if it howls at start up then switch wires from tube to tube. keep the primary wires long incase you have to swap them.

Well, either I got lucky or the orientation doesn't matter: Tranny's installed. Sounds great.

Yeah, with no negative feedback from the OT in that amp it shouldn't matter. Nothing to cause oscillations if you do get it wrong.

Yep, it can go either way round on an AC15 or AC30 because there's no global negative feedback.

Only concern would be if you are running 2 amps and the phase is now flipped. It’s 50-50 that it flipped.
If it says "Vintage" on it, -it isn't.

Thanks for the pictures!

What a crazy layout.

I guess they try to keep it vintage.

Seems like it would run really hot with the tubes arranged like that.

Glad you got it fixed. :D

yeah - they do run hot.
the 30 gets really hot with the extra tubes.
I always thought it a bad design to have the tubes right up against the board like that - who knows what going on with the ohm values of those cc resistors once they're at like 180deg. but it seems to work fine - and I play it a lot.

I didn't even think about the phasing. I'll a/b/y it with the 30 and see what happens. It's an easy fix if need be.
