Buy an Eb for $4.00 and sell it for $5.50? Seriously, I've always wondered what "strain" means in this context, too...

Maybe Tag can post a clip and point out times at which these sounds occur?

Maybe note flipping is that 1/2 down step gliss or quick slide thing Robben does that everybody copies. :D

Hey Tony,

Just noticed one more thing. Some of the power-supply nodes are incorrect as far which parts of the circuit they feed.. B5 should connect to the PI, and B3 to V1. If you change those, you will also need to exchange the 2.2k resistor and the 22k in the dropping string.

Thanks again!

Its almost like a false harmonic, but not done with hitting part of the string with your finger. Here is a good example of "strain" and a bit of note flipping. On the third bend you can hear the note change its quality after the bloom. VERY cool! I did this with a TwoRock Sig version 2. Not my fave Dumble style amp by a long shot, but still, most TwoRocks do this very well. The Emmy Pro is exceptional, and is probably even better than the Dumble at this ONE thing.

The strain and note flipping exampl is above. Here is #183 straining all over the place, and you can hear the vowle like sounds all over as well. Listen to the bend at around 8-9 seconds in. You would swear there is a wah pedal on, and there is not. All amp. Totally amazing IMO, as I could never get this with anything other than a great Dumble or great D style amp. At 13 seconds you can hear it start to flip a note, but it was mid phrase. If I had stopped and held the note it would have been great. Also the bends at 23 and 27 seconds shows a bit of note flippage. To ME, this clip may be the best example of what makes 183 so special. It can do the Ford smooth thing in its sleep, but dial the gain a little higher like here, and the harmonic thickness and richness is almost obscene. Thicker and richer than any AC 30 I have played. SO fine!

EDIT: Just listened to the entire clip, and not to sound like an ass, but this is probably my favorite recorded tone ever. The amp is flipping notes all over, and sounds like its on the edge of blowing up. It has every special quality that I find in the best Dumbles. Totally off the chart tones for ME. Damn I wish I could have kept that amp. I am praying the Quinn nails it.

Put up a clip of your amp to compare and lets see how close it is. Talk is always very easy. Here is my TwoRock Artist, which gets pretty darn close IMO. http://www.soundclick.com/player/single ... 72079&q=hi
Maybe I should start a seperate thread for comparisons, with 183 as the standard.

Hey, no problem here! You just do not like Dumble amps, or, like the same qualitys in them that I do. I have played many Dumbles that I actually preferred my HR Deville over, and maybe those would have had the tone that was right for YOU. Its all a matter of what you are looking for. 183 just has the qualitys that made me love Dumbles in the first place. All that strain, phaseyness, tubeular, human vocal, note flipping goodness! :D

I hear ya, No I like Dumbles and I agree the 183 is a great sounding amp but I'd like to hear a little more gain in a more classic rock context or a more hard rock. But hell maybe that's the style most don't like to hear from a Dumble.Oh well. who knows, if I ever get a way to record some clips I can embarrassed myself with my not so fabulous playing skills and my possibly not so good sounding bluesmaster clone . I would love to have someone critique my amp anyway. Just waiting for the funds to come in to do so. Thaks, Chad

I agree, although the order seems wrong the 3K 3W actually feeds the rest of the supply.

Look at the color of wire from the various nodes on the power supply.

There is a red wire before the 2K2 resistor node to V1, it is actually fed from the large 3K 3W resistor (B5).

Then the purple wire (B4) from the top of the 2K2 to V2 and the yellow wire on the 22K to V3 (B3).

Hey Chad,

You probably have a better amp than 183 for harder rock, as 183 does not compress when you turn the gain up. (Which is why I dig it so much!) Here it is doing something heavy. The leads are totally clipping, sorry about that. You can get an idea of what it sounds like in heavy situations though. I still love it! Even with lots of gain, you can almost hear the acoustic propertys of the guitar undrneath the overdrive. Very cool for me!
