Anyone tried these trannies? I'm gathering for a 5E3 build and the cost from Triode is pretty low. Any opinions/suggestions?

Yes, great stuff. I used a Deluxe type OT on a Princeton Reverb build, sounds great.Big Jim wrote:Anyone tried these trannies? I'm gathering for a 5E3 build and the cost from Triode is pretty low. Any opinions/suggestions?

I'm using a JTM45 style PT and bassman style OT in a build that I've been using for about a year now. No problems and they sound great. You really can't beat the price.

I just used a complete Twin set in my Dumble ODS 100w amp.
So far so good!

Yes I have quite a few in my amps right now. Good product for great price.
Re: Magnetics Components
I used them in my latest 5e7 build and I like what I hear so far.. Well constructed and dealing with Triode was painless and fast... I built another 5e7 with different trannies and this amp seems more defined and with a little more punch.. But I also used the Sozo Blue vintage caps vs. the Mallory 150's used in the first 5e7 so don't know if that matters or not?? Plus I liked the price..Big Jim wrote:Anyone tried these trannies? Say no more, I'll give them a try. I also plan to use the Blue Sozos in this build. Thanks for the info folks!playonit wrote:I used them in my latest 5e7 build and I like what I hear so far.. Re: Magnetics Components
I was wondering who made transformers for Triode Electronics.
Re: Magnetics Components
Great value for the money if you need basically a bone stock unit. I've only used the Bassman and Twin style OT trannies. They have a new 15W SE OT with a 4-8-16 taps that I want to try in a harp amp.

All the models I've seen and used come from Marvel Electric/Magnetic Components.TheGimp wrote:I was wondering who made transformers for Triode Electronics.
Re: Magnetics Components
Triode supplies their TF110, a nice small OT, but not an exact equivalent of any Fender-branded OT: it's an UL model with a 6K6 primary. Pick the Magnetic Components 40-18022 if you want a closer copy - 8K primary, single 8R output with self-leads and all.Anyone tried these trannies? Re: Magnetics Components
I've used 3 so far.....hammond, heyboer, and mag comp. The mag comp stayed if that says anything. Doesn't mean it's better, but to my ear it is slightly, and it is subtle enough that you can't possibly lose. If everyone tries several different trannys there will be some that prefer each one, but i don't see there ever being a clear winner. So i guess the point is as i said, you can't lose. I hear bigger differences between 3 different brands of EL34's, and even there i may like one better today and the other the next etc etc. For the money i'd go MC.

yep, just waiting on tubes to try out my latest ods 50w build. so i would say your in good company if you decide to use MC trannies.
Re: Magnetics Components
We use a lot of different makes of transformers. The OT's these guys have made for us are very good sounding, but I find their PT's run quite hot, which in itself isn't a problem except the running temperature of the chassis gets warmer which affects other components and the tone of some amps may get squishier. All this of course depends on the amp iteslf, the power tubes you are using and the orientation of the tubes....i.e top mount chassis always get hotter than bottom. As for reliability, never had a single one of their transformers fail and we've used 100's.
For cooler running PT's, Heybour and Hammond offer better solutions.
A word of warning some of their replacement transformers I've used for repairs don't have the same mounting dimensions as the original transformers...i.e. their 100W JCM800 OT. Not even close. You need to drill. A second word of warning is their mounting ears are shite......but they sell brackets for some of the more notorious heavy transformers which eliminate the problem. 9 toimes out of 10 these ears are bent on arrival. Another simple solution that works fine is to use auto fender washers to distribute the weight a little.
