Dumble book in

Post by renshen1957 »

Anyone checked out, know about, or purchased the book on HAD at dumblebook.com?

Price is 130 Euros plus 40 Euros shipping from Luxembourg to North America.

http://dumblebook.com/page1/page1.html has samples of the interior pages.

I know Tonequest did a review a while back.

Loads of pictures, no schematics

Did anyone pony to buy one of these?

The people behind the book are pretty aggressive in their approach.

They bought the rights to a lot of the pictures, that have been circulating the net for years and thereof IMO - being public domain for years. Hereafter, they sent nasty letters, with so so law suits, to good people like Rob Livesey in order for him to take pics off his web site.

Now you got the background info. Personally, I don't want to support the people behind the book and I'm not buying a book.

However, it would be great fun, if someone would make a copy of the book and put the chapters up for pdf download.

Hi renshen,

I do own a copy of the book, and I recommend it.It does not contain
any schematics and only a little tech talk (which is what this forum is for),
but many nice shots of numerous Dumble amps, and a number of interviews with the man himself and his ex-partner, the late Jack Smith.
Interesting read for sure.Pricey?Yes, but keep in mind that this book
is certainly a labour of love, and the author basically a one-man operation. Not necessarily a must for techs, though, IMHO.
Hope this helps,
Marcos

Hi

Thank you for the links. That was what I was looking for, and you inspired me to be more tenacious when searching for threads.

Before I posted, I tried the search function for "dumble book" and also for the URL of the website, which brought up the Amp Garage Forum Index as
the result.

As I work with data bases as part of my day job, I figured I give it a try, again after your success.

Knowing that this is an older book, I figured it had been topic before.

In the past I tried "search all terms" for other thread searches with little success, but gave it a shot this morning, this time I struck gold.

Tried Search for all terms, and received more than a few with dumble book in it.

Best Regards

I might have access to one on the cheap, but don't know if it would fit my scanner, respecter of Intellectual Property and copyright that I am.

Hi Marcos,

Thank you for the information, and does help in my decision to purchase a copy or not to. A great book is inexpensive, a not so good costs a king's ransom if you get taken.

I try and read all book reviews before making a purchase, but truly value those from reviews from individual who own a of the book. I was warned about the book by Lee Jackson that promised schematics to all his amps and how to build amps, but a reviewer of the book on Amazon.com gave the work one star as it did not deliver what was on in the title and ad-slick for the book. It was only $24.95 USD, but from his comments I determined it was too rich for my blood.

Best Regards

Hi Marcos,

AFAIK Jack Smith and Alexander Dumble have been personal friends for a long time since their youth, but never "partners" in a business sense. They both had their own and different businesses. But because their shops have been in the same building in Santa Cruz for a while they of course helped one another here and there, as friends who have their shops next-door to one another of course will do.

Have a great day,

Max

Hello again Max,

actually Howard and Jack (what a great guy!) shared the same shop for many years.
(Not next door)

And they worked on a lot of stuff together.

Jack was also the only (real) authorized Dumble technician.

Best,

John

When I worked at Peavey, Hartley Peavey bought the book and made me a copy. Personally I think there's better and more useful info on this forum than there is in that book.
