How to ground RG-174/U
Just picked up some RG-174 to wire my inputs on my latest build...What is the easiest and cleanest way to ground to the input jack. It appears in some of the pictures I've seen the a separate wire is soldered to the wires shield and then shrink tubed with the soldered wire coming out the bottom of the shrinked area and the actual input lead coming out the top of the shrinked area??? --- anyone have any pics?? Thanks!!
Re: How to ground RG-174/U
I have seen Ceriatone do that but can't say most others.
I just ground to the input jack and on the tube side I shrink tube that end.

Yeah, adding the wire to the shield just makes a cleaner looking wiring job.
I do it as well. But you certainly can just solder the braid to the ground point.
Usually on signal carrying shielded runs, you ground the cable at the source and do not ground the shield at the destination.
If you ground both ends it can cause a ground loop and be noisy.
Put some heat shrink tubing at the none grounded end to neaten it up and prevent contact with the shield.
To do the shielded end, strip back about 1 inch of outside insulation, then unravel the braid.
Twist the braid tightly and then take a short wire with a stripped end (22-20ga) and twist that into the braid.
Solder it.
Then slide on about 1 inch of heat shrink to cover the solder joint and shrink it.
On the other end strip back the outside insulation and braid back about 3/4 inch, then trim the jacket and braid flush.
Slip on about a 1/2 inch piece of heat shrink tubing and shrink it.
Done.

Thanks Mark... are you saying you just cut back the wiring casing enough so there is enough shield to make it to the tab and just solder the shield direct to the ground tab on the jack???M Fowler wrote:I have seen Ceriatone do that but can't say most others.

Play-On-This
Yeah I strip back about an inch take my very small screw driver to unbraid the shield then twist that braided wire and tin it. I do not use shrink tubing on that end.
But I do use tubing on the non-shielded end.
Many ways to do it.

+1 on guitar nuts, I had forgotten about it but there is good solid stuff on it.
Thanks for the help!!!
Welp here's what I did... decided on the soldered wire way .. which was easy enough.... thanks....

Yeah that is a lot better and easier for cliff jacks, looks good.

Just a hint but try to keep the ground wire shorter.
You can have a graceful loop up to the ground but don't make it too long.
