2010 TwoRock Artist clips and soon pics

Post by Mr Dumble »

My personal favorite clone. This was a TwoRock sig V1 that I had "downgraded" by Bill to an Artist. It differs from a sig V1 in that it has 1 different transformer, no high low power switch, and different grid resistors. To me, this sounds much better. I will get pics up later tonight or tomorrow, but I just love the tone of this clone. This is with a Gibson R9 50th aniv straight in. I have a Boss RV2 in the loop. I added a touch of delay on the Boss BR900 recorder. Mesa 4/12 with G12H30s and an SM57 pointed at the center of the cone but on a sharp angle. I find this kills some bass, but adds some additional Dumble "phaseyness", for lack of a better word. Hope you like it at least 1/2 as much as I do. Not the smooth Ford thing, but a tone that is similar to one I found on 183 and fell in love with. Now if I can only get those vowel sounds like 183! :(

Nice clip Tag. Still wish you'd post something where we can actually hear the amp through your recording tech.

I liked your playing here. But, it sounded nothing like 183 for me. THe density of the bass and low mids is 180 degrees wrong. 183 has so much bottom it adds "stuff" in that EQ range. The TR amps have the opposite. The typical thing they do is remove bass at either the cathode bypass of CL2, the cap on CL2, or the load on the pre-od network. It is utterly impossible to get 183 tone and feel unless you cram tons of bass into V2. The TR tends to have a soft blooming bass, not a dense textural bass. It is very easy to get buzz with the latter if not done right btw. I feel that it is taking the easy way out when amps are made that remove all the stuff to make them "smooth". Misses the mark bigtime in my eyes.

This is why both you and I were able to immediately and easily differentiate Brad's comparison clip of the Dumble versus TR. Because they were totally different.

The Revelation clips sound nothing like the blues clip in the first post. No surprise that you can get a variety of tones from one amp (or pair of amps) but that's pretty dramatic. I like blues clip, the revelation clips sound buzzy and thin to my ears, although very similar to each other.

The TR is buzzy and a little thinner than the Dumble. The Dumble is clear and has more girth in the lower end. Sounds almost like Dumble went with a mica cap where the TR went with a ceramic, though I know that may not be the case.

At least I didn't hear any "politician".

Tag,

I have to agree with the others, that it's pretty hard to tell what is what, on the Revelation clips, due to the recording quality. The playing is great, and I suspect you are right in saying that they are close tonally, but trying to make a judgement from the clips is like being asked to sample fine wines from a spittoon.

It would be great to hear good quality clips of these amps, then we could all get closer to experiencing the real tonal characteristics of a Grail-tone Dumble.

Cheers,

Paul.

IMO I don't think they sound similar (I'm not being biased, they just don't sound alike to my ears). Although they do both sound great.

They do sound very similar. However in a really really bad way. These are arguably the two worst sounding clips I have heard from you. Aggressive buzzy and nothing like a good Dumble tone. Plus none of the vocal thing or dense low mids. Clearly we are hearing something in the chain influencing the sound more than the amp circuit.

Kind of what Bob I is saying in a different way......

Alike, yes. Exact, no.

I did not like the tone either. Shrill and sharp. Probably the recording, but

NOT VERY GOOD!

:?: Hmmm...That sounds muffled to me. Like it has a blanket over the speakers trying to smooth it. Very muted and in the background. I think the super quick slap back delay from my DD3 is what some guys are hearing, but thats what I thought Ford had on the original. No problem, I have hunderds of other A/B comparisons, I will have to dig up another.
