Suggestions for a 10" combo carcass?
I got what was once an 80s ss Marshall combo, I'd rather it was a 12" but it's a very nice solid little box. I was thinking 2x6V6 5F10 Harvard as I have a nice 60s Jensen C10R for it.
Then I ran my Lightning clone through the box with a Celestion Vintage 10-60 and it sounded pretty dang cool so I'm also thinking Spitfire. Also, I have some NOS EF86s and read good things about the Dr. Z Z28. A grab and go hard hitting 10" combo might be fun to impress people, but while I love 2x10s I'm not so convinced of 1x10 combos except for recording or practice.
Any one have any fave 10" ideas? Anyone think an EF86 in this small combo might give me problems w/ microphonics? Anyone here ever hear a Z28?
Sweet little Harvard? Nasty Little Spitfire or Z28? Others?

Honestly, I've tried this type of transplant a few times, nothing ever sounded any good until I trashed the old cabinet and put the same amp into a better cab. Don't underestimate the cheezyness of these cabs.

Maybe chop it down to make a head cabinet. The speaker is the only part that cares about the box it has to live in.

I've just made a hot rod jcm800 in one of those combos. 20w6v6
Re: Suggestions for a 10" combo carcass?
It's a rather decent box, it's 1980s, it not chipboard but ply all around, box and baffle, which is 1/2" Baltic type. Not sure about joints, probably half lap but that's the same as most Marshalls that sound good and have held up. The tolex and assembly - rivets, baffle screws, look like it was done by chimps in a rush for afternoon tea and banana scones. Maybe better this is all done in China now.
Now I'm thinking the lack of pine and thin tweed baffle may not give me the sweetest Harvard, and maybe it is just too dinky for a Spitfire. No trash can though - at worst it becomes a 10" Champ and it goes to friend's kid.
Anyone else think this can't handle a Spitfire or Z28 before I waste the $200 on the iron, or just do a Champ?

Excellent. Was it really the 10" Master Lead 12? If you got a JCM800 in there I know I can get a Spitifire or Z28. I was worried about that too.JamesHealey wrote:I've just made a hot rod jcm800 in one of those combos. 20w6v6
You give no warning so I assume it worked out well.
Re: Suggestions for a 10" combo carcass?
Looks like a Lead 12.
You could squeeze in an 18watt Superlite, and take advantage of alll 5 knobs:
http://guitaramplifierpcbs.com/Document ... c%20v3.pdf
They spec the Antek 2T230, but the smaller 1T200 will work fine (Lower the power tube cathode resistor from 150R to 130R) and is much lighter too.
It's an easy enough circuit that you don't need the pcb - in fact a turret/eyelet board will leave more room for the PT and OT. There are plenty of layouts/pics of SuperLites on 18watt.com.
Put in an Eminence Ramrod speaker (or Celestion alnico if you can afford it), and you're good to go

MINE was lead 20 pretty big chassis i made it ptp style though.

I vote 6V6 Plexi with a Ramrod. I love big amps in small packages...
s'pose a more reasonable person would take one of those EF86's and maybe build an AC15 though. There are ways to shockmount the socket and deal with the microphonics.

Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

if you like 6V6s better (I do too), this iron would only be about $75 including shipping, and work great for any 2x6V6 design:

Re: Suggestions for a 10" combo carcass?
It looks like you have enough room to hog out that speaker cutout and cram a 12" in ... if that helps at all.
Re: Suggestions for a 10" combo carcass?
Ha! I just tried a 12 in there and it made me laugh - the speaker would be holding on by it's teeth. Way gonzo! Maybe once I'm done with it as a 10 and if the tranies and tubes allow I might cut a new baffle out of 3/4 for kicks.DonMoose: It looks like you have enough room to hog out that speaker cutout and cram a 12" in ... if that helps at all.
Ken very cool info thanks. I like both, but I do find EL84s often harsh/bright, and I have only one mp left but plenty of mps nos 6v6s - I was thinking of doing the Spitfire as a 6V6.Ken Moon: if you like 6V6s better (I do too), this iron would only be about $75 including shipping, and work great for any 2x6V6 design:
If I read the specs right is that torroid really 400mA? Are all torroids so much cheaper than E cores? Chinese or not that OT looks very useful to have, if just as a tester as I never know whether to go with 8K or 6.6K with 6V6s. I've no idea what the Z28 calls for here either. I was thinking of getting rid of the tube rectifier in the z28 for heat and that torroid would then be perfect. I've decided not to spend a lot on iron for a 1x10.
I was thinking Ramrod too for a hard rocker but I just tried my Lightning clone through a Vintage 10-60s as a single in the carcass and as a 2x10. I love 2x10 closed backs but am now dubious of the ultimate use of 1x10 for a screamer amp. The 1x10 was more of a hyper yapping beagle than a nice big dog, loud but w/o the cojones to back up the bark. I'm thinking now this is an insurmountable limitation and I should go for the sweetie Harvard with the old Jensen 10.
I might wander the NYC stores and see if I can find a Z28 in a 1x10 to demo, but music stores in 2010 leave me queasy.
