Cool restoration.

Did you decide on using the wax or is that something you read about?

i decided to use wax cause it was non conductive and my daughter's preschool sent home a bunch of candles i didn't know what to do with, a light went off and i figured sure why not give it a shot. the other reason was, wax was already used on the cloth cover anyway so it felt more vintage... silly i know.

Cool, like you mentioned the only thing I would worry about is it getting hot enough to melt the wax.

If it is a paraffin type wax I believe it has a higher melting point than say bees wax.

That is really cool that you were able to salvage the cap tubes to use on the repair.
Still looks vintage. :D

i capped the ends in epoxy to prevent the leakage i'll have to monitor the wax for the next couple months on a weekly inspection just to make sure it's stable if not i'll think of another way to keep the look.

just an update on the caps..
i had the champ on the bench a couple weeks ago for a check up. The caps look great no leaking or melting wax and meter perfect. I'd say at this point it's a successful restoration.

That is a great restoration, with a ton of attention to detail! And yes, I can use those pictures for reference! Sweet job on those caps...how retro!

Ahem ahem, I think your 6 months have come and gone - it's been a year now so we should get double sound clips! :)
Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

...in other words: rock and roll!

That is a wonderful restoration! I have an old Magna Electronics (before Magnatone), '47 I think, SE, one metal 6L6, that I got years ago to do that with. Oh, where is the time....?

Finding time is a hurdle. I actually traded my labor on this restortation for Traynor YGL-Mark3 head that needed a cap job and tubes. I still haven't gotten around to ordering parts. - LAZY!!! I picked up an empty traynor matching 4x12 too. The combo version came stock with 8 ohm JBL K120's my thought is to load the 4x12 with K120 16ohms so I can get back to the 4ohm load and keep the original voicing. the amps claim to fame is the Duh Duh sound on Radiohead's Creep.

The Champ turned out great it was a fun but very labor intensive restoration, the better part of 40hrs. I don't have pics of it but I insisted on ordering a back panel for safety reason's before I would let the client have the amp back. It was made using NOS tweed covering and lined up to match the factory seem lines perfectly. It was to new and yellow so I aged it with a deluted orange lacquir, that turned out beautifully.
