Steve's wire is a great deal. I recently bought 1,000 feet in different colors. Keep in mind, however, it Does Not come on a spool. I wound my wire onto plastic spools, but Teflon is a real PIA to work with.
Mouser will sell you wire like Steve's for about $32.00 per 100 foot spool. I decided to go with Steve at about $12.00 per 100 feet, and then wind it onto a spool with a battery drill. But like I said, you will just about have to unravel the bulk 100 feat and then wind it onto a spool. If you were to do just one spool, you would probably never do it again. After you do the first one, you kind of develop a little system and the other spools go faster. With my wife helping, we could do one spool in 3-10 minutes. It all depends on how tangled up the bulk wire gets.
Good Luck

Well, it may have come on a spool originally, but they can get a bit large to ship:

You could buy one of those multi-color sets of el cheapo wire on little spools (from Harbor Freight, MCM Electronics, Radio Shack, etc) and throw out the wire just to get the spools
