A step drill bit is a must have for any amp building person. Buy the good one that goes up to 1 1/4 or 1 3/8, it is very usefull and not just for amp building.
They are not cheap though, expect to pay 40 to 50 bucks for a good one and use a little bit of oil to prolong its life.

+1 on that.

To be specific, non-isolated jacks and the grounding topology contribute to the sound of a D style amp. They also contribute to or hinder the amp's ability to reject rf and ground loops. I would say the question is: do I like what I've got (or have heard elesewhere), or do I think a change in the structure will improve things for my ear?

It's been mentioned many times that if you follow #124's grounding scheme that your amp should be very low S/N.

Just study the schematic along with the layout and it should answer any questions regarding what goes where.

That picture is practically my desktop background right now, although I'm doing a high-plate non-HRM.

Step Drills

Post by David Root »

+1!!!

I have two, with a third on order. 1) 1/4 to 3/4 in 1/16s 2) 1/4 to 1 3/8 in 1/8s, and 3) 7/8 to 1 3/8 in 1/16s

I need 1 3/16 to drill chassis for the Belton octal sockets.

I'd get a Greenlee punch for that.
