Finally, pics of my Princeton/Hybrid... Clip added

My wife was using my digital camera, it's back. I put a pair of plyers in front of this tiny amp so you can see just how small it really is. I started on the head cab today, it's 17"x7"x6", very cool. I have a 1x12" cab that is a perfect match for this amp so I'm going to match the tolex and grill.

I have a paper faceplate as a test fit and I haven't wired up the footswitch yet. The boost and channel switch are on the back, bright and mid boost on the front. I'm using the unused 5V rectifier heaters to power the relays, works great.

I've found this Hybrid style amp to be far more agressive in OD mode than the HRM. The clean gain is on about 3, OD gain is on about 4. I really like these JJ 6V6's, kinda like mini 6L6's in tone.

I notice that you use different kinds of caps and resistors. Are that intentional, or did you just happen to have those particular components lying around?

How did you wire the 5V to supply the relays? Are the relays 6V?

I still haven't decided if I should go for Weber's relays that are mounted on a print card, and can be connected directely to the 6,3V or if I should make it all myself.....

VERY intentional. The plate loads are all Vishay/Dale, all coupling caps are xicon MPP except OD2 which is orange drop PS, the rest of the resistors are metal film.

I used a 5V regulator. The relays are 5V.

I've used them, but making it myself is a matter of DIY pride.

what did you use for the power supply caps, brand? and where did you get that 4x20uf can cap? is that custom made? It definitely saves some space. I am interested because I am working in a very similar project, but yours actually turned out to be even smaller than mine. Good job.

I've had the 4x20uF for years, since this actually WAS a Princeton maybe 7-8 years ago. I think I got it from Allen amps when I bought the chassis. The other is an F&T from AES.

I'm about 80% done on the head cab, it's really tiny.

I use cannister caps a lot. They are space savers. JJ is now making 500 volt cannisters in either 40/20/20/20, 32/32, 50/50 or 100/100. They are available at Mojo, Hoffman and a couple other places. Remember to order the clamps because they are usually sold separately. There are still some vendors with the Blue LCR caps but those are getting scarce.

I got some of the 20/20/20/20 Aeros from AES a few years back and they work fine too. Those are designed to solder to the chassis so you may need a clamp if you are attaching it to aluminum -- you need a big soldering iron to attach it to steel. I cheated and hit it delicately with a torch. Not in the manual but sometimes it is the only way to loosen some of those old Fender blobs.

One disadvantage of these is that they have a common ground. It would be really cool on the double units to have separate grounds so they could be run in series.

I am a bit confused. It seems that the OD 1 and OD 2 values in the layout and schematic do not match. In the schem it's 220k/2k7 and 150k/1k8 whereas in the layout it is 180k/3k3 and 120k/2k2. Which values did you end up with?

The OD combinations I've seen so far are 220k/3k3 and 150k/2k2 and 180k/2k7 and 120k/1k8. I would expect the higher values to provide slightly more bass than the lower ones.

Oops... thx for pointing out the mistakes. There was a real mish-mosh of values wasn't there?

I ended up with 220k/3k3 150k/2k7. I don't know that there's noticably more bass, I felt it was a softer attack and better bloom.
