Pentode /triode switch for SE class A EL84/6L6 help please.

Post by rogb »

Hi to all at AG, this is only my second post so please be nice... :D

Two questions really here -

(1) I have done plenty of searching all over for a clear layout for a pentode/triode switch for my Ampmaker 1x1ECC83 1x EL84/6L6 SE5a, (my first build) but I can't find one that I can say, yes that is 100% clear.

I have the EL84 and the 6L6 wired in parallel so I can swap tubes around for different tones, at the moment, I like the 6L6 as I can get plenty of volume and it gets fairly dirty if you dime it .

(2) I would like to experiment with some more gain and tones so the P/T switch would be a start, I am also going to change the input jack resistor from 1M down to see if I can hit the V1a a bit harder. Got a 1M trimmer on the way so I can find the spot easily.

Any more help or tips for increasing gain some more without adding another preamp tube would be much appreciated, as this is my practice before the big D-clone build, oh yes!

I've wired the pentode/triode as per the tone-lizard's site, but if you've searched, I'm sure you've seen that one. I've built lots of SE's, but none w/ parallel output tubes, so I can't offer much help there.

What kind of tone stack are you using. If you have a typical fender type, you can add a raw control to get some more dirt. If you're using NFB, you can make it switchable to open it up a little.

You might try an EL34 in the octal socket and see what you think of that.

I appreciate your reply and forgot to mention  that I have a tone stack bypass switch and that does help in upping the gain.

The amp designer Barry said that an EL34 would be too much for the supply which I guess is the PT/OT so I will stick with his recommendation, shame as I have a couple of good old Mullard EL34s.
