Need Variable AC Supply

I probably only need to be able to get to 10VAC. I will probably use it mostly for having low AC to test transformers. So I looked on-line and found this. Do you guys have an opinion about the gear or the supplier.?

hired hand, This is the variable-autotransformer I use all the time.
Use on all amp's. If you play out in clubs or main stage run your gear
with this. 120vac all the time or at 10vac if you wish for testing.

Why not a Powerstat variac?

i use the eico 1173 because it has meters for volts and amps. I've tapped off the meters and run additional large 6" Westinghouse VU's for greater accuracy. Great for forming caps and bringing amps up. The amp meter is priceless in trouble shooting before damaging any parts.

It's def. setup as a bench unit though if you didn't tap it for additional meters you could use it for shows.
The link posted above is a pretty standard live unit. though i personally don't recommend using one unless you know for sure what you are doing. or have unlimited access to parts or amps. they can do serious damage if you aren't careful!

Why not a Powerstat variac?

I do not know why not. That is the reason for my posting. Whether I get a "Power Supply" or a "Variac" does not really matter to me. Either way I need to buy something, and I am wondering what devices you guys use to get 10VAC.

A small transformer or even an AC wall wart would provide low voltage AC for little or no cost. A function generator would provide a higher quality variable frequency wave, and have other uses as well.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind being able to generate 440-1kHz.
Besides Ebay, is there a good place on-line to buy test equipment.?

you can buy a 3v-0-3v transformer from radio shack for testing transformers. under $10

test equipment online i've found goes to ways.. Ebay which is cheap but most need to be calibrated and or restored. then new which is $$$

the best places to pick up test equipment are laboratory auctions and hamfests.

I've bought things here before. He's got a few quirks. Follow his instructions for getting a stock check, etc. You'll need to fill in some things to get to his minimum order. I suggest a few used tubes. He won't sell you anything that's junk unless he's told you that's what it is.

PSA for anyone unfamiliar with Variacs. We have three at work...and one of the bastards has a scale which leads you to believe you're looking at AC Volts...when you're looking at some unrelated scale. 120Vac is about 86 on this thing. I didn't do it, but one of my coworkers powered something up at 120.

Sometimes they have an A/C output of around 9-16VAC for running accessories
