Sound City 200 on fleabay
I don't know how this made it through the night but it's still there. I'm so tempted buy I need a welder and I'm saving coin for that. Go for it somebody.

Definetely a starter setup. You can't begin to buy the parts for that price. I imagine the impedances are ok to sub in 6CA7s and the '70s pre and you've got a D103 with a lot of headroom. Might be just about right to blow up my Leslie too.

Looks like Partridge iron. But damned rusty Partridge iron. I wonder if that has anything to do with it not working. I think I'd rather get one of the VHR kits with Heyboer repro iron than take my chances.

Re: Sound City 200 on fleabay
I think that rusty iron sounds better. Otherwise why would they get $4000 for a 59 bassman? I bet you a dollar it's got an open HV fuse due to a shorted or reluctant cap. BTW, I've seen four or five 64-65 Black face Showman go by recently with no bids and buy it nows at +/- $650. One was a white knob, so may have been a '63. For a certain kind of (country) music, it's the sh**ts. Also listen to Albert King; all he ever used.Bear wrote:Looks like Partridge iron. But damned rusty Partridge iron. Re: Sound City 200 on fleabay
Anyone got info about those Partridge irons ? I've found some nice EI 114 iron that look the same, thought they're some PT, definitely not for tube amp, but could be re-wired. Anyone know where to buy this plastic thing on which coil is wired ? I do not know how you call it in english, couldn't find in dictionary, damn ...

Those guys certainly knew how to wire up an amp.

Here we have a good pic of the infamous Sound City Mk4 active preamp, in the 200 Plus version. This preamp is known for high levels of hiss/hum, etc----it has a very wide range of adjustment but can be difficult to dial in because a small % of knob rotation produces a large change in tone----the Bass, Mid, and Treb pots control a 12ax7 gain stage that's dedicated to each particular range of frequencies----- huge clean tones once you get it where you like it.Structo wrote:

Notice the many longitudal wires on the boards with old, fiber insulation---these sometimes make for interesting troubleshooting, along with old/cold solder joints.
I've given up on trying to repair the 120 watt Mk4's and instead gut the Sound City circuit and build a Hiwatt or other design there.
The Partridge iron is legendary but there's no way to know if the iron on this 200 Plus is good or not----finding replacements would be a problem for this 200 watter and would be very expensive-----so $650 isn't bad if the iron is good but it's somewhat of a gamble, IMO. All the output tube sockets have been replaced--- why ?
I've got another 200 Plus laying around that needs a rebuild--- i know the iron is good on mine---- i'll get to it one of these days...............gldtp99

Genuine partridge will run you $325-360 each if you can find it. The new reproductions bless there little iron hearts just don't put out the rich tones of the olden days. But will get you up and running for under $200 each piece.

Just got my SC 200 Plus running last week and it is kickass! New tubes (KT-88's) from Sarge. Bought mine mint with a problem for $450.00!
Just needed new bridge Rect. diodes and voila'. I got (4) Mullard 12ax7's in mint shape and a Brimar Ecc81. I got two (testing at 100%) GEC KT-88's!!!!!!!!!
Simple problem actually, It came with (2) RCA 6550's and (2) GEC KT-88's. The RCA's had blown taking out the (2) Bridges.
I figure Tubes alone were worth over $800. Final cost if I sell the tubes.......$200 profit!!!!

Sounds like a dr-103 on steroids. The Cleans with a strat sound very SSS.
