Its custom gaping and wire insulation at MM, you pay for the guy to tweak it
to a spec and the wire supplier to double dip the wire they use.
Not doing a custom order. 25 w Deluxe Reverb Power Transofrmer, and a larger Output Transformer. It can run , 6V6, 6L6, KT-66, a switch to run EL-34, KT-77. These are available off the shelf. I have the correct part #'s.

I was looking at the web site. Great prices, it seems, but what is M-6 laminate? How does it affect the sound?

M6 lams are high power/low loss - very nice for OT's, quite always required for world PT's having to work with 50 Hz mains.

In a nutshell, M6 is more efficient, more hifi-sounding and more expensive. The common M19 is dirtier - can be a Good Thing™ in guitar amps - and cheaper.

iknowjohnny,
There are two listed that I found, 50 watt Fender OTs.
#40-18000 or #40-18001 one has 2-4-8 ohm secondary, the other is 4-8-16

So only certain ones have this M6 laminate? I wonder if thats because on those particular models the originals did. I hope the ones i ordered don't. "More hi-fi" doesn't sound very appealing !

I believe a hi-fi ot was used in the Marshall 18 watt - and a cheap one at that. I used a hi-fi Edcor OT in my Express - it screams! The current Express schematic suggests a Hammond 1650H. I wonder if the "H" stands for hi-fi?

I also used a Deluxe OT from Triode. Only cost 26.95. It sounded good with 6V6's and believe it or not, even better with 6L6's. Of course I only ran the 6L6's at 380 volts. I later changed out the OT for a "proper" 4K 40watt Fender OT. Funny,I didn't notice an improvement in tone. I think it sounded better with the smaller 6.6K OT!

I should have written different from the usual M19.

A lot of amps, classic and modern, have used hifi OT's, vide for example Trainwreck's, either fitted with Stancor or Dyna hifi OT's; Marshall's, using off-the-shelf Radiospares hifi OT's; etc.

Hammond suffixes designate turns ratios and core size.

For custom spec work, I've read that Edcor is the place to get them done for a reasonable price for high quality.

I've had Edcor custom wind three sets for me and they are very high quality and they are good customer oriented.

Well, instead of waiting to build the new amp, this thread got me feeling anxious so i tacked in the marshall 50 OT into the build i'm going to be copying. Not sure how i feel about it. But of the three OT's i have now tried i *think* i prefer the other two, the heyboer and hammond. In fact, i think i prefer the hammond to the heyboer thats in it now. And the mag comp is last, at least to my ear. But this is preliminary and it would be the first time i did a 180, so tomorrow who knows. But at the moment i'm not particularly happy about having bought the MC trannies. Not sure i'm even going to use the MC OT after this, and i think i may even tack in the Mag comp PT to see if i like that or not too before i use it in the new build.

Don't get me wrong....it's by no means lousy. But the others edge it out. the heyboer is smoother and richer, the hammond is fuller than the heyboer. The may comp seems a tiny bit harsh, but that could be that it's not positioned right since it's only tacked in.

iknowjohnny,

Just so you know, none of the Marshall OT's have the M-6 upgrade as far as I can tell.

I figured that, and i wasn't trying to say thats why. I'm just saying it doesn't sound as good as i'd hoped. I also just tacked in the hammond to get a listen to all 3 within minutes and i changed my mind about that already...i like the heyboer better. Of course the heyboer isn't a marshall clone and is actually got a higher primary by a bit than the other two. It's 4k. Whether thats the reason i dunno, but i prefer it to the others.
