9-pin tube plugs

Post by Rich M »

Does anybody know where I can buy the 9-pin tube plugs used for making bias meters for EL84s? I've found the assembled probe units, but I want to make my own.

you might have to track down test sockets through surplus.

You could convert a broken or weak 9-pin tube. Carefully break off the old glass and remove the tube components, leaving attachment points for your new components. You'd have to fashion some type of protective cover (PVC maybe?).

Alternatively, ask one of the bias tool vendors if they'd sell you some of their bases.

I have the parts for an octal bias tool, but I haven't assembled them yet. All my amps are cathode biased ;)

I was looking at Hoffmans Bias checker kit but he only offers it in Octal.
Something that caught my eye that I have not seen before is he says:
Please install all tube sockets with a tube in the socket.
The pins on the socket will not be lined up correctly if you do not have a tube in the socket while soldering them.
It may be very difficult to install the tube if the pins are not aligned properly and you may damage the tube socket pins.

Do any of you do that?

Chinese - quality is OK - noval socket savers ref #P-ST9-900 for $3.95 ea at AES.

You may find them cheaper from other sources, for instance the Tube Center lists them at $2.00 ea. and $14.99 for 10.

The top is held by a central Philips screw and nut.
