Rocket fun

Post by argonaut »

I completed a rocket this past weekend, minus the cab. Thanks much guys for sharing info and just posting in general. :)

I used an HTS-9144 from Heyboer and an old Dynaco A470 OT. I made the board from 1/8" G10 and the face plate from some black cherry that I cut down and milled myself (I'll be making the cab from that as well).

I gotta say, I'm really impressed with this amp and I've yet to put in my good tubes. I'm actually surprised at how full it sounds. I can't stop playing it. I've read it over and over again that the rocket circuit is a winner and I agree 100%.

Thanks again guys for making this place what it is.

Nice looking build! :D

I think the Rocket may be my next build as well.

Thank you. I'm really pleased that I finally built one. It covers a lot of ground for a four knob amp. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it holds together when it's dimed... really tight, no oscillations. I was expecting the beautiful cleans, but that wicked kerrang has got me really smiling.

Thanks, I couldn't help noticing that you keep building these things..so I figured they had to be good. :D BTW, I usually don't have much time to post, but I really enjoy seeing pics of your builds. Thanks for sharing them.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, I used pvc 20 awg solid 300v, rad-shack pvc 18 awg stranded, teflon silver plated 20awg stranded wire, and various tranny clippings that were found scattered over my bench to complete this build...and I think it sounds just fine.

FWIW, if you don't like adding the missing mid knob on the front panel, an internal trimmer pot in the tone stack can help dial in the amp to your preferred guitar.

BTW, what guitar(s) do you use with it?

Thanks for the kind words argonaut.

You really did build a nice looking amp. The only thing better than this Rocket is the Normster Rocket Reverb that is a sweet reverb very subtle and added DPDT brite switching also opens up more possiblities.

very sweet

Such a great amp. I love mine as well. Your build is very cool looking. Congrats and enjoy.... what speakers are you going with. Hey an airbrake is a lot of fun with this amp.

Zippy, can you share that mid-pot idea on a trimmer, as pic or schematic.

cheers ange

Hey Ange!

I think RJ Guitars may have posted the amp that embraced this idea to the fullest - I think he had about FIVE trim pots on the board of his Rocker Tweaker.

In those places where a lil' tweak can yield real results, it's often easy to substitute a trimmer pot for a resistor - right on the board. In this instance, a 25k pot is ideal - although for the mid pot, I'd just as soon put the control on the front panel.

I'll ping RJ to see where the pic resides and ask him to share it here.

Not yet, but I hope to soon.

Thanks Zippy, I've dialed in a lot of old fenders using that method. Works great. I have the usual variety of guitars w/ singles, p90s, buckers. I honestly like the amp with everything, but my buddy's old SG w/ p90s takes the cake.

I wanted to stick fairly close to the original with this build. I have the parts on hand to build another and I plan to get a little more creative with it. Although I like the idea of verb, I think I might try a tremelo.

Thanks a lot ange. I'm currently using it through an old pine bassman cab w/ old celestion G65s. They sound good but I'm guessing some alnico blues would be the shiz.

Great looking build and I am sure it sounds as good as it looks..... 8)

The Rocket sounds fantastic opened up retaining its depth and note definition. I think the cleans are beyond what most people would consider good.....

geekmacdaddy,

Sounds like fun and the Rocket is a great amp.

Are you going to come up with a great pedal to compliment the Rocket :?:

All of Geek's pedals compliment the Rocket or any other amp you plug them into! 8)
