DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
Hi,
First post here, after a lot of Learning, and still a lot to learn for sure.
I’m a lap steel player, on the quest to the (guess who) D.Lindley Tone… with some electronics background…
Cannot afford an amp from Funk, so I’m on my way to an OD40 DIY
I’m following a lot of great discussion about the OD40, and here are my two cents…
I'm putting together a BOM for the ODS40 schematic.
There must be mistake and I’m still looking for some part, supplier, and information…
But I’m sure someone will be happy with it, and hope some other one will help clarify what need to be
Thanks for your help and contribution!
Lousse
EDIT : #40 Schematics seems to have some mistake, so here is a new BOM based on the Tony Albany 70’s Layout
As always, any help improving this BOM is highly welcome!

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
I glanced over it.
Why do you have 4 octal sockets?
Same on 6L6 / El34 it is a two tube amp.
Only 3 noval sockets needed unless you plan on reverb or FX loop.
I wouldn't use any 1/4 w resistors as well as they can't take the voltage.
The resistors a that are red I believe are carbon film.
I would use 1 watt CF instead of 1/2 watt.
The RN65 resistors are fine at .6 watt because they are military spec and are overrated.

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
Thanks for the help !
You’re right, the sockets lines were past and copy of the 124 BOM… Thanks
I change the 1/4W resistors to at least 1/2W
I thought the RN65 were more correct to the #40 pictures than all Carbon… But I may be wrong.
I can make two files:
First one : Pictures correct with obsolete part
Second one : With Carbon film Resistor, and best findable replacement parts.

This was a lot of work!
Thanks

Welcome Lousse, And many thanks for the effort you have done on the BOM. Wish I could contribute something. Thanks again,Chad
Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
Thanks for your support,
Today, I've add a few component (knob, Fuse holder,Light, etc)
I'm not very comfortable with capacitors, so I have ordered them by Block (FET input, Preamp Tone Stack, Overdrive, Power stage and Power)
Any help to name them as Electrolytic, Polystyrene or whatever is highly welcome !
Again, any help to make it 100% Dumble true components is welcome !

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
Glanced over it. Keep in mind that some of the resistors are the RN65 metal film variety but most are CC of CF.
Also for a true clone you'll need the yellow Sprague Atom filter caps which are no longer in production. Also the production method of the 6PS orange drops has changed so you'll want the old production caps.
Then there's the shielded cable.... good luck!

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
It depends how accurate you want to make the amp to what it originally had.
Due to obsolete parts I think it is more realistic to buy what is available now.
The RN65D resistors are fine and should be used on the plates.
I was talking about the other locations where HAD normally used the CF resistors.
lousse,
Have you looked at the newer layout that Tony made for this amp?
The way it is color coded you can kind of get a feel about what type resistors are used where.

Thanks Jelle and Tom
just next to : Part available Now
https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.php?t=5986
On Tony's layout
Can you please help me on that one ?
I can see :
Resistor
Light Blue
Blue
Orange
Grey
Brown
Capacitor
Yellow / SPRAG ATOM
Orange
Grey / IC Capacitor (Illinois Capacitor)
Thanks !
Well, I think that I must add a collumn Original manufacture part ,Structo wrote:It depends how accurate you want to make the amp to what it originally had.

Tony is probably the best person to answer questions regarding the layout since he drew it.

file is updated with original Manufacturer Part collumn
Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
As far as #40, many parts can be found if you turn over enough rocks and I've turned over a bunch. However, I have no interest nailing a 100% clone and will substitute where applicable.jelle wrote:Glanced over it. So instead of paying crazy money for 40 year old Schumacher trannies with the leads cut short, I'm going to use modern replacements. Instead of retarded money for a period correct NOS Triad F313X, I found it's 120v only brother NOS for a couple of bucks. I've found every yellow Sprague TVA cap value at least twice over. However, no way I'm going to use electrolytic caps that old.
Here's what I've found to unobtainum, the three 2W Electra CF resistors on the PS board, the Calrad 12V relay and the exact shielded cable.
I'm ready to build, I just need a chassis and whatever PT it takes.

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
Ok, so, here is a new file,
I reworked the Resistor and Capacitor by block (FET input, tone stack, etc...)
There is a collumn where you can find (and fill in the blanck) the original part manufacturer
There is an other collumn where you can find a close non obsolete part (you can still fill the blanck ! )
This way, those who wants to find the old obsolet expensive part have the BOM
And those who wants to find a newer part, also have their BOM, and can have an idea of what sound good, and compare it to original part.
Enough for today, I'm going to bed !
Any help/comment welcome

Re: DUMBLE Bill Of Material for #40 and 70's Layout
You can fund the 2w resistor if you search mepco
the calrad Relay can be obtained the trick is to find what products it was used in and source that item not the part!
I agree with the yellow sprague it's just not practical to use old caps.
A '69 bassman 022814 transformer just sold on eBay for $51. They can be found cheaper then new iron (w/ uncut leads)
