question about .01 mid cap...some opinions.
Hi guys!. i have a switch as suggested by scott, to change the mid cap, from .01 to .022 to .047. the fact is that in od mod i find that the amp is a little baasy or farty with the .01 cap. Do you think it's better to have a 1uf cat bypass cap in od1 to use that value?. What cathodes resistors are u using on the od tube and what cathode bypass caps?. i'm refering to the hybrid A non hrm amp. Thanks a lot for your suggestions!

Hi SWT,
I greatly prefer the .01midcap. I use a 10uf on CL2 bypass cap though. Seems odd, but the extra bass helps IMO. I use 4.7uf on OD1 and OD2. I do use a 180k before the 100k OD gain trimmer (instead of the 220k) this will help with the bass and top end issue.
I use 180k/2.7k on OD1 to keep things a little clearer. Works for me.
You must use the complete Skyline stack to make the .01 work IMO.
Also, use 270pf snubbers on OD1 and OD2
Lastly, try a 10pf bright cap on the global master. It really balances the bass.
Let me knwo what you think!

I'm starting on my hybrid-a type of amp.
I have planned to use 4.7uF, 1uF, 4.7uF, 4.7uF on CL1, CL2, OD1, OD2
I thought I got these values from another post... Should I change the 1uF to 10uF?

I use exactly that combination in my modded Deluxe Reverb II. In the Concert I had all 4u7 and changed CL2 to 2u3 (2u2 e-cap plus 0.1 orange drop). This reduced some of the fartiness at high gain settings. I used to use a 0.047uF mid cap in both amps but changed the mid cap in the Concert to 0.022uF. But that is as low as I will go.

Well, it's been a topic of much debate for a long time. I can summarize my humble experiences as follows:swt wrote:Hi guys!. i have a switch as suggested by scott, to change the mid cap, from .01 to .022 to .047. the fact is that in od mod i find that the amp is a little baasy or farty with the .01 cap. 1. If you use a Tele, the .01uF sounds fabulous, best Tele tone I have heard. The Strat doesn't like the .01uF cap (especially in the coolest positions, "2" and "4," which to me are THE reason to use a Strat in the first place) and my 335 sounds good if I turn the bass down some, but only on the bridge pickup... The neck pickup is too thick sounding with the .01uF cap for my taste.
2. The Strat sounds great with the .047uF mid cap, and the 335 works terrific with it too, both bass and treble pickups. The Tele doesn't sound nearly as cool as with the .01uF cap.
3. As Scott says, I think the .01uF tone stack is easier to dial if you use the pots that should go with it (250KA for mids, 500KA for bass w/.001uF cap and 10K tail to ground, 250KB for treble). Conversly, the .047uF tone stack sounds better, IMHO, with 100KB for mids, 250KA for bass w/o cap and with 1K tail.
4. You can get close to the sound of the .047uF cap if you turn the bass down and the midrange up, but it's not quite the same.
Now, the most important question for you: are you really in Patagonia? If so, whereabouts? Curious, I was out there earlier this year.Cheers,
Gil

Hey Gil!! thanks a lot for your reply!!. yes i live in Neuquen, Argentina. It's a small city located at 300 miles from the ocean, and 300 miles from the mountains, so i can have a 5 hours trip and enjoy what i like about nature... where have you been? Did you came to argentina or chile?. It's a pity we didn't know this before...i would have liked to meet you, and maybe have some chat on amps...or even made as a tour guide for you guys!. I know a lot of cool places around here, as i used to race in motorcycles (enduro and cross), and also have a 4x4 and go with my friends crosscountry to reach really interesting places. Tha landscapes here are awesome. And i've been in almost all the patagonia in my journeys... . You know...this is a small place to live at...so i have been lucky enough to be stage manager/translator for guys coming here to play, like scott henderson, mike stern, dave weckl, robben ford, etc. and talked a lot with them about amps...etc.

To put my answer in perspective, my father was born in Argentina and I was born in Uruguay like my mother. Lived in both places, as well as Brazil, as a kid, and have spent the last half of my life in California. I do go back every year, though, and spend about a month summer vacationing down there while people enjoy the cold weather in the north.swt wrote:Hey Gil!! thanks a lot for your reply!!. yes i live in Neuquen, Argentina. In January my wife (in blue) and I went to El Calafate to visit some friends, and to see the Perito Moreno.

This is getting off topic, but it's interesting to read about south America.. I realize that it's probably the continent I need to visit some time. I've been to Europe, since that's where I live, and I've been to USA. Both are pretty similar in most ways, but I'm sure south America is more different, just lika Africa or Asia would be.
I'd love to see for myself what it's like, since one can't really trust what we see on tv. The tv-news tend to only show footage from those parts of the world, every time there is an accident, war, poverty or something bad going on. Just looking at the picture, makes me want to go!

Right, the PM moreno broke a couple of months after I was there. I have been in L.A. 15+ year, and 23+ in California, and I work as an engineer here since 1986.swt wrote:wow!. so maybe we can meet sometime in the future....the last time i've been in calafate was...1995...so long ago, man. life is a blink...so fast. it's a beautiful place. the perito moreno was about to break by the time you came. right?. Re: question about .01 mid cap...some opinions.
I have traveled a bit: northern Africa, western Europe, within the US and Canada, and only to the more southern part of south America (Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil). To me, what I've seen of south America is a lot like say Spain, Italy and France. Not only from an architectural standpoint, but especially considering that in the case of Uruguay and Argentina, for example, we're talking about countries of immigrants, primarily Italian and Spanish. Go to Montevideo and you may think you're in Barcelona, only prettier, and go to Buenos Aires and you will see that it is possible to improve on Paris...Tdale wrote:This is getting off topic, but it's interesting to read about south America.. I say that with a smile, but I totally mean it!
I say that with a smile, but I totally mean it!While the UK and Germany are definitely different than southern Europe, I don't think of them as anything similar to the US, maybe a little like Canda, if at all. Although I have never been to Autralia, I hear that it is very similar to the US in many ways, I hope to get to find out for myself one of these days.
Cheers,
Gil
Re: question about .01 mid cap...some opinions.
When I said that Europe is similar to the US, I meant northern Europe, Germany, UK, Scandinavia etc. And what I meant is that all of them are "western". For example, when I go to the US, I don't find it all that different from Norway, culture vise. The food is about the same, I see the same restaurants, I see the same cars, I can talk to people about the same tv-shows and movies, I know the language etc. etc.
Going to South America, Africa or Asia, is at least more different than going to the US, or the rest of Europe...at least I think, since I've never been there

one thing i can say...women and food is extremely good in here... . really beautiful women, and pizzas, etc are different but in a better way. also the landscapes are fantastic. we have different weather all trough the country, and that makes each place unique...from desert, to glaciers, mountains, sea, lots of lakes, just to understand what i mean, look for "el valle de la luna", "el puente del inca", "el tren de las nubes", "Glaciar perito moreno", or Neuquen, the place i live at. You'll be amazed.

Have you tried a .022uF or .033uF mid cap? I wonder if those might give you a little more midrange push than the .047uF without farting out on neck humbuckers like the .01uF does.
