Post by angelodp »

I have some this Beldon RG 174/U shielded cable left over from guitar work. Is this ok stuff to use on amps.

Depends where in the circuit. I used to use it and have put +70 VAC thru it OK. It's only rated for 30 V (not sure if that is AC or DC, it makes a difference). So it is OK from input to V1A, probably from V1A to V1B after the coupling cap, but that's about it.

I would NOT trust it on any line carrying high level DC as well as signal AC, like from a plate to the coupling cap.

Originally I used it for pickup lead out wire, I used to build pickups.

I would definitely NOT use it between the PI and the power tubes. The core is only 26 ga steel, not even copper, and will not hack it there. Shielded coax is not normally used there anyway, if you have to because of noise then you have other problems (major layout).

It's actually very good to use for the shielded cable between the input jack and V1a because of its very low capacitance and microphony.

One of the best cables I've found for this purpose in fact.

But I agree with David - there aren't many other places you'd likely use it.

Maybe to/from an FX loop jack but that would be about it.

What is the outside diameter of the 174/U?

I think it is about 0.10". It is definitely less than 1/8".

The Belden stuff is about 1/8". Certainly nicely sized for this kind of application.
