Anyone use Celestion Blues?
Anyone try the Blues? How do they sound compared to Greenbacks ... do they handle TW style gain well?
Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
In general, blues are more chimey-sounding (think Vox). I haven't heard them with a wreck-type circuit but have heard a pair in a 2 x 12" Vox AC30CC and it sounded good with the higher gain settings. I own a Mojave 2 x 12" with an alnico blue and G12H and it's a good (popular) combination. One thing though, the blue is a 15 watt speaker...I'd think you'd want something with more power handling for the wreck, no?
Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
I'd be using two of them so I think it's okay. I hear they're conservatively rated at 15 watts.

Hi,
I use 2x12 blues in a Bogner cab.......I use it with my liverpool clone,I find the express to be a little to much with these speakers.

Were you not around at ampfest when Allyn was playing my pool clone through the blues?
Thanks
Chris

Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
I was probably blowing my ears out with Brian's '69 SLP clone or Mark's Hiwatt Clone. You know, I really missed alot of good amps in the main room, specifically where two rock and snider amps were. I did hear Allyn playing through the two rock at one point as I was in the next room playing through the Allesandro. Also have video footage of greg playing through a wreck clone sitting on the desk in the small room. In the main room, I was really about Allyn's 36 and my cab since that was what I was building. So...uh...guess that means you have to bring it back to Greg's for the next one!
Uh Uh
I have blown a blue in a 5E3 amp which is rated at 12 watts. I wouldn't say they are conservatively rated at 15.gnugear wrote:I'd be using two of them so I think it's okay. I hear they're conservatively rated at 15 watts.

Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
I seen something about celestion releasing a gold version of the blue alnico with a higher wattage rating. Anyone try one of those yet? I've got original blues in my red panel old AC-30. When I record with it I dime the volume and hit the front end with a treble booster and the speakers sound awesome. I don't know for sure, but I would bet the speakers are getting hit with more than 30 watts. I also did the Brian May trick of pulling every preamp tube except those in the normal channel. Phil
Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
When we had the last NJ ampfest, I ran Allyn's 36 watter, JTM-45 clone, and Mark Huss' 100 watt Hiwatt clone (with two tubes pulled) through the Mojave. Don't think we had any of them completely dimed but they were definitely cranked...the blue held up alright. Ultimately, the cab's going to be paired with the 36 I'm building. You know, for the longest time I thought you just added up all the speakers for total power handling. Didn't realize that in a mixed cab you're supposed to double the amount of the lowest rated speaker so in my case, with the G12H (30W) and the blue (15W), it's rated for 30w not 45w. Makes me a touch nervous as the 36 is supposed to put out something like 50w.
Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
You mean using blues with a Wreck? Well no though I do use blues with my AC30 and my BB. They are loud
I use a Richter with both amps and my Wreck and the blues are just too loud. I love the tone except for the bass but they are too loud. Do you get the impression that I think they are too loud. I have a 2x12 with a 60 watt Weber blue dog alnico and a 60 watt Silver alnico and that cab is much quieter then the Blues doesn't sound like blues but does sound very good. I use it occasionally with the Wreck and Richter and it sound darn good close to the Tone Tubbys.

If you dig the alnico vibe and want good power-handling, you might try the Tone Tubbies. I use the ceramic ones, and goodness knows they've been hammered but never given a hint of trouble. Carlos Santana runs his Dumble into a Tone Tubby cab (built, are you ready for this--with hemp plywood) running 4 Tubby alnico 12s. Word is that's the tone you hear most on the Shaman album. That's what he played at the Crossroads festival a coupla years ago.
I'm planning to get some of the hemp-coned Celestion V30s that A Brown Soun offers and try them with my new amps.

When I first finished this latest (my first) build of my Matchless Lightning-meets-Tweed Twin, I ran it thru one of my Celestion V30s. Pretty good rock tone, but above the 10th fret it was cone cry city! Yuck.
Then I tried it with the Tubby and, dude, it was magic. So I took the Tubster out of the Boogie and it now resides in the homebrew. With the gain at about 9:00 and the master opened up a bit it yields the hugest, fattest, most complex clean I've ever heard. One of the guys at a local music store was rather condescending until he plugged a strat into my amp and started doing his arpeggio thing. "Where can I get one?" says he.
Tubbies are very nice, though they do sound best after being flailed for a while, and I like low-power Webers in my little amps better.
Just gotta keep on experimenting!

Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
I had to post this because it fits this thread so well. I just got off the phone with this guy I've never met before in my life. He had been referred to me by a former bandmate who thought I was looking for another guitarist. I told him it was my brother who was looking for a guitarist and we started to talk about gear. I told him I had recently built a copy of a Trainwreck Express. He said that he used to hang out in Ken Fisher's basement and talk to him for hours. He had almost bought a rocket but couldn't afford the 3,000 dollar price tag! He told me that he had a pair of the reissue bulldogs, and he had bought them because Ken Fisher really liked them and recommended them to him. It was kind of bizarre, too say the least, to talk to someone I had never met who even knew who Ken Fisher was! Just thought that might be of interest to you guys. Phil
Re: Anyone use Celestion Blues?
Too bad he didn't buy it then. Coulda have sold it for 30 000 bucks nowadays! But I bet he would rather not.
