Re: EL34s for a Dumble. What is the smoothest and sweetest NOS?
As I said, I spoke to several builders and am working with the one "I" felt was as fanatical as I am about getting it right. No compromises anywhere. If it can be done, it will be. If its not achieved, then I do not think anyone could do it, including Howard himself. Maybe its just a really special amp, or maybe there are Dumbles that sound a lot better. For what "I" like in a Dumble, it does it all.CHIP wrote:Here's a suggestion, Let Brandon and Henry have the same access to your Dumble as your builder and see who can "nail" the tone the best.
How can any one of these great builders clone something special and unique unless they know EVERYTHING about your amp? Then everyone could post clips and we all can decide.
I believe the great builders who contribute to this forum could clone that THING just as precise as your builder.
In other words "put your money where your mouth is"
By the way, hope your builder has some "aged" iron around.

Structo wrote:yes. So this mysterious amp builder is going to work with you to build the ultimate clone?
Simple. Make it sound EXACTLY like my amp.But if you cannot communicate what you want from it how is he supposed to build it?
Strain and muffle are not adjectives I would use when describing the tone of a guitar amp.
So the mysterious builder puts together a pile of parts and then you play through it.
If it doesn't nail the tone in your head, you said you will scrap it.
So is the builder out of the dough it took to build the piece of shit or are you going to pay for his time and materials?
I am paying one way or the other.
Match the tone of my amp. How can it be any simpler?I can't imagine building an amp for you.
It would be impossible to build it to your satisfaction!
If you can't tell the builder in technical terms what you need, is he supposed to read your mind and get lucky with the components?
It's just caps and resistors after all, there is no magic.
Do you honestly think that the ODS you bought is that great?
Yes. If it was not the best Dumble I had heard, I would NEVER, and I mean NEVER have spent that kind of money. I was not even looking for one. I was totally happy with my twoRock type3. I stumbled on this amp, plugged in, and after 3-4 chords and some single notes, I felt sick to my stomach because I knew I had to have it, no matter what it was going to cost me.
I can't tell the difference between that and any of the many amps you have posted clips of before.
Mostly TwoRocks, and they all sound great!![]()
Then your ears must not be that good, because at TGP, after endless blind A/B tests with all kinds of clones, almost everyone picked the Dumble out EVERY single time, and that was with me TRYING to fool them, and making every amp sound as close as possible. The only difference is the $$$$$!![]()
![]()
Fuck you. Now I know who you are. You went through this EXACT same thing with me at TGP. Now I know you are just a jealous prick. You must have more money than sense.
I spend my money where I want. For ME. I just came back from the Porche dealership as a matter of fact.If you are going to throw money down the drain like that, at least throw it at a worth while charity where you actually help people rather than frustrate them.![]()

And members here say I am the trouble maker?? Listen to this jerk. LOL!If you are not here to learn, bugger off.
We don't need a fanboy fanning the flames, it's already hot enough here.....
Will do.Oh and say hi to Bill, he's got his work cut out for him! :lol

I agree. that Dumble had to have something wrong with it.Bob-I wrote:That was just GOD aweful.... please give me my ears back.

Not sure about all Dumbles, but mine sounds just about as good at below talking volumes, as it does wide open. The MV works as good as any I have tried, maybe better. I have a clip up at you tube to show itnickm57 wrote:This goes to show how out of touch theses "clips" are with the real world players.
The Amps master is on about 1? The player is playing at a level around the same volume of the demonstrator speaking.
Yes..... I've always recorded and played at this level![]()
this sort of demo is what a POD was made for.
An amp like this would need to run around the level of a mid to quiet drummer (2X6v6s') to sound right. Frequency response just not right at that sort of setting, you can get a pignose to sound better at that level.

Tag, I'm trying to understand what you are hoping to add to The Amp Garage.
I'm happy for you that you have a genuine Dumble ODS and that it is THE AMP TONE you've been hoping to find your whole life. But this is a forum for people who want to *build* an amp that has THE TONE. Are you ever going to add to *that* discussion?
I'm happy you have someone else building you an amp. I'm happy you like German sports cars. Neither of these things has anything to do with building your own amp. Do they belong on this forum?
From your clips you seem to be a good player. Are you an amp builder at all? Again - this is a builder's forum. I'm hoping you'll find a way to add constructively to this builder's forum. I haven't seen it yet. I haven't seen you even TRY.
What I have seen so far is either "taking without giving" (what tubes are best?) or "posturing and insulting" (never heard a clone as good as my Two Rocks), or "I'm not telling" (If you want to see the inside, buy one). From where I sit, none of these are adding anything of value.
You said earlier in this thread that you plan to share "some info I get on how to get these things RIGHT." Even that statement sounds like you plan to hold back. Posting clips is not adding value. Sharing part value/layout tips is adding value (as one example). I want to think you have value to add - I'm suggesting you start adding value. Find a way. Quickly. Take it as a challenge every bit as difficult as cloning THE TONE if you have to.

The amp I am helping with will sound dead on with my 80s, and be brand new. If it does not, the amp and project will be scrapped. I think it can easily be done, and its an excuse guys use for not getting the tone correct in the first place.

So to recap: You think it can be easily done. But if noone can do it - including Howard, they're all making excuses.

Agree with you all
TAG is just trying to stir up some dust at this forum.
Untill he contributes with something worth our while, I'm not going to respond to his provocations.

It's the physics of sound you are disagreeing with here. Not me.

Tag, what do you think about the Bruno's Super 100 you've tried ?
How many ? Do you prefer the old ones ?
I'm a big fan of them (Pony and Cowtipper), even if I build some amps but I've not found the Super 100 to be that good.
And BTW why didn't you talk to Dumble directly ? I tried his last amps and to me the modded Fenders were a notch above the ODS I played (ok, it was a long time ago). It could be hard at first to reach him but I think he will be able to nail what you want to the T, and for less than your actual one.
At least he will understand your point.

I have to reluctantly admit that I've been morbidly fascinated by the TAG threads. Kind of like when you drive by a burning wreck on the freeway, and have to slow down to see if any charred bodies are hanging out of the wreckage.Zippy wrote:+1

That has passed. I won't read another TAG thread. If you ignore the troll, will he go away?

I love physics, but the fact is my Dumble sounds just about as good at talking levels as it does at stage volumes or even louder. Listen to the clips at Youtube, or shoot me an email if you are in New jersey sometime and you are welcome to come try it for yourself.
