70s Build

Post by two tone »

Hello,
I´m about to start a SF clone,
(style 2 or 3).
I have 715 and 716 ODs ,no 6 PS.
Which one would you use?
Regards Hanno

Mylar. Nichicon or Xicon if they are more readily available. 715 or 716 might be a tad harsh and grainy in that style build- JMHO

Thanks Funk,
I have so many ODs,I´d like
to use these.Could you describe the
audible difference of the 715/716?
Also I´d like to use solid core wire,
not sure about the heaters though.

I'd use Mylar or polyester caps. Stay away from the 715 and 716 series unless you do not overdrive the section of the amp with those caps in it. They sound horrible when overdriven, IMHO.

Besides, the 70's dumbles have 6PS caps. Not 715/716 caps.

You can try it and see if you like them.

Hey Hanno,

you can get several different capacitors from Banzai in germany.

I´m also searching for a german shop offering those Sprague 6PS.
Let me know if you´ve found one.

Hi,

yes, I know all these shops, but they don´t have the 6PS only the 715/716P.

Bierschinken is a typical german type of sausage/meat.

Guys ,

I have lived in Europe (Netherlands) for most of my life. I have tried a lot of cap brands and types. From my experience I can tell you that the WIMA MKS4 630V is a great cap for this ckt and is easy to find in Europe. Many electronics stores have these in stock. It won't look as pretty on the circuitboard but nobody will see that when the amp is in the cab and sounding beautiful! :D

Do not get the other WIMAs, they sound as bad as the 715's.

I'd build a WIMA ODS again in a heartbeat and I have most the other US types in stock.

Have fun!

I have lived in The Netherlands until about 3 years ago. I currently live on Manhattan, the Big Apple!

I have been able to see both sides of the pond, pretty cool actually. :D

Hi , In my clones I have always used 715 or 716 caps and I think they sounds good.
Only one time I bought 6Ps and I noticed no big difference.
I ordered 6Ps from www.tubesandmore, but I paid a lot of fees. I live in Italy.

I beg to differ. The Polypropylene caps sound a bit harsh to me when I set up the amps where I like them. This also depends on the speakers used.

My two cents,

Same here, but I'm sure my ears are not as fine tuned as some here. But as they say if it sounds good then use it. Although it don't hurt to experiment right :D Chad
