what sort of style of music do you play?
where will you be playing?
do you been a speaker cabinet?
if you have a cabinet what do you have?
what kind of guitar do you play single coil or humbucker?
seriously i could give you a 100 amps for under a grand that dont suck
if you aren't sure about any of the above questions look for an ampeg VT22 or VT40
both are a combo version of a V4 head (not a V4B!!!) the 22 has dual 12" altecs (417?) and the 40 is a 4x10 version like a bassman.
both are loud and F*^ and offer both clean and over driven tones aswell as the famous ampeg reverb.
The V4 can easily be purchased for under $700 so you could pick up a nice set of new tubes and still have $$ left over.
Style? Blues, blues rock/classic rock, with some jazz tinges.
Played where? Home project studio set-up, maybe just jamming with a few buddies at home. Not interested in live (concert, club, whatever) playing in the least.
Speaker cabinet? None. Cheap solid state amp that makes sound and that's all I can say that's good about it. (Peavey Rage 108
Type of guitar? A Kramer Striker 600ST, and though it may be looked down upon (cheap body and hardware and electronics, I know), I've kept all these years, as the neck is sublime and wouldn't trade it for the world. It has a bridge humbucker (with coil tap - I believe it's a Seymour Duncan) and two single coils (which don't cut it, IMHO). All the electronics WILL be replaced (the single coils are definitely gone, undecided about the SD, or may replace all with just two quality humbuckers - make as yet unknown) as well as most of the hardware, i.e. just about everything on it will be getting a complete overhaul.
Looking for a certain Peter Green-ish, Paul Kossoff-like, early Santana, early Clapton type of tone, not that my description is of much help!
Willing to make a significant investment in all of this, that is, if it's worth it. Maybe I'm expecting too much, I don't know. Hope that helps clarify things.
